R.E.M. mark the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, Radio Free Europe, was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early 80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional and modern. Throughout the 80s, they worked relentlessly, releasing records every year and touring constantly, playing both theaters and backwoods dives. Along the way, they inspired countless bands, from the legions of jangle pop groups in the mid- 80s to scores of alternative pop groups in the 90s, who admired their slow climb to stardom.
No band but Nirvana made more breathtakingly transformative use of MTV Unplugged than R.E.M., the only act to headline the show twice... By 2001, drummer Bill Berry and some of the campfire vibe are gone. But new songs like At My Most Beautiful, with its neo-Beach Boys harmonies, and the elegiac bubblegum of Imitation of Life show a band that could still sucker-punch hearts, while quietly magnificent takes on Cuyahoga and So. R.E.M. members Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills recorded the new material at the Music Shed in New Orleans, as well as at Berlin s Hansa Studios. Additional recording and mixing was completed at Blackbird Studio in Nashville.
Produced by longtime collaborator Jacknife Lee, the album features guest vocals by Patti Smith, Peaches, and Pearl Jam s Eddie Vedder.
In comparing the record to the band s previous release, Accelerate, bassist Mike Mills has said the band wanted this new one to be more expansive. We wanted to put more variety into it and not limit ourselves to any one type of song. RECKONING 180 GRAM LP - R.E.M. abandoned the enigmatic post-punk experiments of Murmur for their second album, Reckoning, returning to their garage pop origins instead. Opening with the ringing Harborcoat, Reckoning runs through a set of ten jangle pop songs that are different not only in sound but in style from the debut. Where Murmur was enigmatic in its sound, Reckoning is clear, which doesn t necessarily mean that the songs themselves are straightforward. Michael Stipe continues to sing powerful melodies without enunciating, but the band has a propulsive kick that makes the music vital and alive.

Q Magazine gave this Limited Edition 180 Gram Vinyl Pressing Four Stars out of five and said it made for very interesting archival listening. It shows a group cresting the cusp between art rock alternativism and chart friendliness... The general impression is of a band free from constraints rocking with a vengeance.
R.E.M s later albums have sold by the container load. But they had to make albums like this to build a fan base that brought them to notice. A number of critics place this record as their best. The band does sound as though they are having to work to be heard.
There is significant energy in Finest Work Song and The Byrds-like Welcome To The Occupation. It has been some time since Michael Stipe has as many words to say as he did in Its The End Of The World As You Know It and The One I Love has to be one of their best songs of all-time.
