This album is not only the mega rare 1st/1st issue of Led Zeppelin s legendary 1st game changing LP from 1969, but has a label error on side 2 and was also the personal property of JOHN DU CANN most famous as the guitarist in Atomic Rooster and the legendary Freakbeat band The Attack who was friends with Jimmy Page Robert Plant from whom this copy may have originated and whose guitar playing sound in the band Andromeda 1968-70 is said to have influenced Jimmy Page s vision of the way forward, and how Led Zeppelin The New Yardbirds, as they Led Zeppelin were called at the time would sound Title: Led Zeppelin Artist: LED ZEPPELIN Year of Issue: 1969 Label: Cat no: ATLANTIC 588171 Matrix codes: 588171 A//1 588171 B//1 Country of Issue: UK Gradings Record Side 1 Side 2: EX EX Sleeve: EX I have downgraded this due to the minor lamination issues I ve highlighted below.
But upon first glance the sleeve would grade EX Label: Side 1: Side 2: EX EX The Hardest To Find Led Zeppelin Album In The World Personal copy of John Du Cann, renowned guitarist with Atomic Rooster, Andromeda, The Attack etc, and friend of the band.
Additional Publishing Credit print error on Side 2 label to the Superhype one.
Tracks 1, 3, 4 credited to Superhype, Track 3 also credited to Jewel Music in error, which as far as I can gather is only present on the very, very earliest 1st run of the 1st/1st issues, before spotted and corrected.
Genuine 1st pressing with Superhype Credit Fully Laminated Sleeve Turquoise Sleeve Lettering Red/Maroon Label Uncorrected Matrix numbers on run out Matrix:A//1 B//1 Further Information/Comments Like the Beatles 1st issues of Please Please Me , original first pressing of Led Zeppelin s iconic debut appear for sale on Ebay regularly.
This may suggest that they are both not as rare as is thought, and as such Mint copies and those with a documented provenence are of a premium.
The copy I am offering for sale is one such copy.
Whilst it is not absolute Mint, nor is claimed to be it is a very strong Excellent and it has very desirable provenence, as it was the personal copy of John Du Cann.
I purchased it at the auction of the estate of John Du Cann on 12/01/2012 at T.W.Gaze in Diss, Norfolk, after his death in 2011 as well as his 1st issue sample copy of Hard Stuff Bulletproof .
I will supply the purchaser with the invoice/bill of sale from the Auction house as Provenience to it s authenticity.
John Du Cann was the lead guitarist with the legendary psych/heavy rock bands Atomic Rooster , Andromeda Daemon , Bullet , Hard Stuff , 5 Day Week Straw People and the highly regarded Freakbeat band The Attack , as well as Thin Lizzy for their 1974 tour of Germany .
His association friendship with Led Zeppelin band members stretches back to 1967, when he used to jam with Jimmy Page at the Marquee club in London, was spotted invited to join the Freakbeat band The Attack.
Over the years The Attack and his next band Andromeda both did a lot of gigs with The Yardbirds, The New Yardbirds, A Band of Joy and Led Zeppelin, where the friendship and mutual admiration with Jimmy Page Robert Plant developed.
I have been told that he spoke about being given this LP by Led Zeppelin on it s release in an interview he gave in the early days of Atomic Rooster in an english rock paper or magazine possibly Melody Maker , NME or Zig Zag but I have been unable to obtain a copy of this, so cannot guarantee whether this is true or not, but judging by his close association with Page Plant, it does not seem unlikely.
In the sleeve notes on the Angel Air Andromeda CD Definitiive Collection , John Du Cann talks about this We Used to do loads of gigs with The Yardbirds at that time.
I knocked up a friendship with Jimmy Page, because he thought we did really good versions of things like Morning Dew .
It was not dissimilar to what he came up with later, and funnily enough at that point , which is going into the Led Zeppelin era, Andromeda used to play on the same bill as them.
In a way there are shades of Andromeda which came out in Led Zeppelin, I believe that anyway - certain guitar segments and things .
.
As I said, we were gigging a lot with The Yardbirds when they still Keith Relf as a singer and later when they became The New Yardbirds, which then changed their name to Led Zeppelin.
We played with them at the Roundhouse in London.
We already knew Robert Plant, because he used to be in A Band of Joy, who had gigged a lot with The Attack This has the turquoise lettering on the cover, Superhype credits on the labels and uncorrected matrixes as follows: Side 1: 588171 A//1 Side 2: 588171 B//1 Only the very first pressings have the UNCORRECTED A1/B1 matrixes.
All subsequent A1/B1 issues have the second 8 crossed-out and then re-etched above.
Detailed condition report.
Vinyl: The vinyl looks superb and has retained its original high sheen.
It has clearly been well cared for and played with care.
Under bright light I could see just a few very fine, whispy hairlines and sleeve-removal marks and one light scuff near the start of side one which has no audible impact.
I have played the entire record and it sounds fantastic, easily EX .
The first press vinyl delivers a huge, powerful sound with crisp separation and absolutely no distortion.
I was listening through a quality hi-fi system see below so that any background noise would be highlighted for the sake of accuracy, I would mention that there is very, very occasionally some soft background noise in the quiet parts and the run-ins/outs, fades, silent grooves and intros and the occasional random click.
Labels: Both labels look superb with absolutely no signs of damage, writing, stickers, tears etc and just very light spindle marking.
Cover, front and back: The cover looks superb with very little wear and a lovely shine, showing that it has been quite well cared-for.
For the sake of completeness I would mention that there are a couple of thumb shaped creases in the lamination near the openings and some light laminate creases around the edges and spine.
There is a small amount of laminate lift around the spine but much less than is usually seen , slight damage to the corner mentioned in detail below and some discolouration to the light areas, mainly at the spine and bottom right corner of the front cover.
Other than this, the lamination is near-perfect, with no flaking, peeling or splitting anywhere.
This is a very good example.
Edge/Spine wear: There is slight separation of the laminate on the spine edge on the front/rear sides as previously mentioned but the laminate is still intact and the separation is not intitially obvious, and just very very minimal scuffing to the exposed parts.
The spine is solid and firm, with just a handful of small creases and the text is all 100 readable.
There is just very light soiling/wear at the opening.
Corner wear: There is just very light wear to the corners, with the exception of the bottom right corner on the front cover, which is slightly creased, which has resulted in some laminate separartion see pic .
Inner sleeve: The inner sleeve is a poly-lined Plastic bags can be dangerous inner sleeve, with no splits, tears or damage.
It has some minor creasing and the adhesive along the top has slightly discoloured with age, but it otherwise looks pretty much like new.
