Item Description
HISTORICAL INFORMATION.
I purchased this record the week it was released back in 1969.
Barely played since then as first University then the cruel outside world took over and I had other priorities.
The actual release date was 31st March 1969 a Monday so it was probably soon afterwards when I got paid for stacking shelves at Tesco that I bought it.
Anyway, forget all that.
THE IMPORTANT feature here is that this auction will end on 31st March 2019 EXACTLY 50 years to the day since this iconic record was released.
A landmark date not just for this record BUT surely in the story of modern music.
Iconic, certainly.
Historic, yes.
Culturally important, without a doubt.
This is a unique once in a lifetime chance to purchase this record on such a momentous anniversary.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Led Zeppelin was recorded in October 1968 at Olympic Studios in London and released on Atlantic Records on 31 March 1969 in the UK.
Strangely in the US it was released earlier on 12 January 1969.The album featured integral contributions from each of the group s four musicians and established Led Zeppelin s fusion of blues and rock.
Led Zeppelin also created a large and devoted following for the band, with their unique heavy sound endearing them to a section of the counterculture on both sides of the Atlantic.
Led Zeppelin had a fully formed, distinctive sound from the outset, as their eponymous debut illustrates.
Taking the heavy, distorted electric blues of Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and Cream to an extreme, Zeppelin created a majestic, powerful brand of guitar rock constructed around simple, memorable riffs and lumbering rhythms.
But the key to the group s attack was shaded and textured, filled with alternating dynamics and tempos.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As Led Zeppelin proves, the group was capable of such multi-layered music from the start.
Although the extended psychedelic blues of Dazed and Confused, You Shook Me, and I Can t Quit You Baby often gather the most attention, the remainder of the album is a better indication of what would come later.
Babe I m Gonna Leave You shifts from folksy verses to pummelling choruses Good Times Bad Times and How Many More Times have groovy, bluesy shuffles Your Time Is Gonna Come is an anthemic hard rocker Black Mountain Side is pure English folk and Communication Breakdown is a frenzied rocker with a nearly punk-like attack.
The album brought the band exploding into the public consciousness, and marked a significant turning point in the evolution of contemporary music.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALBUM FULLY PLAYED FOR AUDIO GRADING: Yes brilliant sound quality throughout This great record plays up to the visual grading.
It plays with powerful and clear sound, with no groove wear or blurring of the sound separation incredibly rare on an original 1st TURQUOISE pressing Strong, undistorted sound free of loud pops or clicks.
I will give a detailed account below: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Beginning with the iconic Good Times Bad Times , the music bursts in with clear audio, no pops or clicks and nice clean run ins.
There is some background noise in places and some static, but nothing dominant.
Moving into the wonderful Babe I m gonna Leave You , which demonstrates Zeppelin s incredible subtle production layering, with notes and effects that are usually lost on most even relatively played vinyls.
Here the audio sings out with great clarity.
For such a quiet track this is just a great audio performance.
No loud pops or clicks just a little background static.
You Shook Me The sound really is clear.
Great music with great clarity, and so hard to find with this type of sound.
Still no loud pops or clicks during the music, and not a hint of distortion.
Silent runout.
Dazed and Confused again plays with clear sound, and the heavily layered quiet instrumental section sounds great.
The long bass intro is so clear and sharp.
Superb clear bright sound.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Side 2.
Slides in with the incredible Your Time Is Gonna Come , A little background static on the run in BUT NOT OVER THE MUSIC, the sound is great.
The delicate Black Mountain Side sounds great.
No loud pops or clicks and a little surface sound.
Amazing for such a paired down track.
Back with the upbeat almost punky Communication Breakdown , the audio is just superb, with a little audible static and clear vocal layering.
No obvious sound interference.
I can t Quit You Babe alternates between the delicate and raucous, this track can be a real test on this album, and here it sings out, with great clarity.
This variable track is nearly always blighted with loud pops, clicks, buzzing crackle and distortion, but not here.
How many More Times , rounds off the album, again to the same audio standard.
Nice clear sound.
No loud pops or clicks, just bright clear audio.
Fantastic All the way through every track plays with sharp definition.
A lack of loud pops, clicks, and certainly no distortion anywhere on this great record, makes this a solid collectable press of this ultimate rarity.
The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, the vocals come through with tremendous power.
Its the same with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars multi layers come through crisp and clear.
The tonal quality makes this a sensational pressing.
With the clear and extra loud First cut engineering giving the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This great record plays with no loud pops or clicks, and absolutely No repeating noises, distortion or jumps.
There may be the odd soft dust particle static BUT NOTHING worse than that.
A solid all round example of this great vinyl.
Graded EXCELLENT .
A staggering first stereo mix, unlike the re-issues which lack the impact.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE LABELS Both labels are in great condition and carry the Superhype Music / Jewel Music Publishing credit.
Famous RED / PLUM labels are superb, with no marks or writing, and no discernible spindle wear.
Only a few ultra light spindle traces can be found, and they are very light.
Great all round deep coloured examples, wonderful A solid all round set.
Graded EXCELLENT.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE RECORD VISUAL GRADING A great piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing.
Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings, this vinyl does have some sleeve removal lines but is presentable and sounds brilliant.
There are a few faint handling marks, this vinyl has been played and is a presentable example of this great rarity.
Unbelievable to think this vinyl is 50 old A really wonderful example.
Graded VERY GOOD PLUS.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE COVER FULLY LAMINATED Mac NEILL PRESS SLEEVE WITH TURQUOISE LETTERING and GREY banding at the bottom.
A couple of thumb creases but only seen in a certain light.
NO laminate lifting on the front or on the back.
The sleeve lays perfectly flat and is very shiny indeed. The spine is perfectly straight and clearly legible see photos. These thin card covers usually fared pretty badly, with serious ring wear and destruction to the edges.
The spines are nearly always flattened, worn and unreadable.
Not this one There is minimal scuffing to the corners, and no rubbing along the edges.
The opening edges are very square and unfrayed.
The white areas are white, with minimal blemishes and just a couple of creases on the back.
The back cover is nice and clean, with NO ring wear, which is unusual for these delicate covers.
A great solid example.
All round, this is a really nice original cover.
Just view the photos to see how tight the edged are.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE INNER An EXCELLENT condition, original white inner.
NO small tears around the die cut opening, NO splits to the seams, and NO wear at the tops.
Crisp and Clean, with no splits, and no writing.
A great example.
It has the blue PLASTIC BAGS CAN BE DANGEROUS etc.
text and is dated 069 --- the year of release.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RED / PLUM pressings are infinitely more rare than the later orange and green labels, but finding pressings that sound great is a real challenge.
A RED / PLUM press with the 1st ever corrected A1 B 1 Matrix version is very rare indeed.
THIS A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY TO OWN AN EXTREMELY RARE PIECE OF MUSICAL HISTORY, WITH A WONDERFUL RICH SOUND THAT IS NOW GETTING SERIOUSLY HARD TO FIND.
