Selling-up my record collection.
I have collected records since the late sixties, generally second-hand.
Sometimes, time shows you bought the right thing, like this first-issue Zepp album.
Turquoise lettering on front cover, as you can see.
I had a look at matrix numbers - 588171 A//1, and 588171 B//1.
Second 8 not struck-through - un-corrected No interesting provenance, I bought this from my Scottish pal in the seventies.
Laminated cover is sound, not torn or split just old .
Some ring-wear, just taking the shine off the lamination, and old bends to corners.
Small name in biro on front and back twice on back Why did people do this?? Edges are good, thin spine very legible.
Record is quite good - not scratched to death or scratched all over.
Side one shows one very short stylus scratch and some quite a lot of these surface hairlines meaning, light surfacey scratches, possibly from a stylus in a very lightweight cartridge, or from contact with grains of something in inner sleeve .
Side 2 shows similar light surface marks and some short light scratches, and a proper heavy scratch at the end of the side.
This runs almost parallel with the grooves, and would only affect playback for a short spell.
Labels show some mottling, and small name again on both sides in biro - see my pictures.
These are valuable.
Added later - I normally look at condition in good indoor daylight, with my reading glasses on.
One gets a different result if using strong directional spotlights or sunshine.
The former method shows-up any kind of damage that s likely to affect what you hear - and the latter reveals every slightest surfacey mark or scratch.
I just looked at the record under spotlight, as someone messaged me to ask about matrix numbers, after dark.
Indeed, a lot of surface scratches.
So, I thought I d play-test it.
I persist in my old-fashioned belief, that records are for listening to I played it quite loud, on my expensive hi-fi.
Play-test went well.
Record is flat.
No skips or stops.
No very loud crackles, or long consistent spells of crackles.
The music sounds as it should, record is not worn-out or knackered .
There are long spells on the record where one does not hear any crackling, nothing but the music.
On side one, some crackles and background crackling for the first few grooves.
A few crackles in the quiet start of Babe I m Gonna Leave You , and in the quiet vocal bit at the end.
Only occasional crackles after that, and not loud.
On side 2, some crackles and background crackling for the first few grooves.
Remarkably, Black Mountain Side , which is tablas and acoustic guitars, plays with no crackling.

On the final track, where I had noticed a scratch, one hears a couple of sounds pops? as it plays through, not a problem.
The above results are from playing it quite loud, actively listening for problems, but still not finding many This record benefits from the fact that loud music drowns out background crackles, AND the fact that records from the 60s have deep grooves, so that surfacey damages simply don t get played by the stylus.
