Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, Phil Spector10:12 This is a superb 1st pressing of the classic Deep Purple album.
An extremely rare pressing, with incredible vinyl and great cover.
The Book of Taliesyn is the second studio album by English rock band Deep Purple, recorded only three months after Shades of Deep Purple and released by Tetragrammaton Records in October 1968, just before their first US tour.
The name for the album was taken from the 14th-century Book of Taliesyn.
The structure of the album is similar to that of their debut, although the tracks are longer, the arrangements more complex and the sound more polished than on Shades of Deep Purple.
The music style is a mix of psychedelic rock, progressive rock and hard rock, with several inserts of classical music arranged by the band s keyboard player Jon Lord.
The request of the record label to record a new album only three months after their debut found the band unprepared, because the intense activity after the release of Shades of Deep Purple had left very little time for writing and rehearsing new songs.
Under pressure, the musicians eventually came up with four lengthy original compositions, and three expanded cover songs.
On the first of August 1968, Deep Purple entered De Lane Lea Studios in Kingsway, London, with producer Derek Lawrence and sound engineer Brian Aintsworth, who had both worked on their previous album.
Tetragrammaton s advance of 250,000 had been used to book two weeks in the studio, a time which covered songwriting, rehearsals and recording sessions.
Time was granted in larger amount than for the making of Shades of Deep Purple in May, feeding the band s ambition of coming up with more complex and ambitious material.
EMI delayed the release of the album in the UK to June 1969, after the band had come back from the US and set up a proper tour of their home country.
The Book of Taliesyn was the first release by Harvest Records, a new label which EMI executives had devised as an outlet for British underground progressive rock groups.
Kentucky Woman , with Wring That Neck as B-side, was the only single released in the UK in December 1968.
Perception of the album changed in modern times, when it received favourable reviews and gradually came to be considered a classic.
ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING: Yes Fantastic sound quality throughout.
This great record plays up to the visual and audio grading and beyond, with great sound throughout.
The best sounding vinyls are simply rare pieces, and every vinyl must be graded on its own merit, as even unplayed pressings can often have variable sound quality.
This rare press has great audio quality.
The harmonies are incredible, and the vocal separation is just amazing.
Every instrument is clear, and the audio layering is just astounding.
You can also hear sounds in this press that normally go unnoticed or are obliterated by very slight imperceptible surface wear.
There is certainly NO distortion, no loud clicks or pops.
THE BOOK OF TALIESYN is a complex and varied collection of music, and hard to find in clear audio condition.
Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically sections.
This pressing has strong undistorted audio, with super clear sound.
There is certainly no dominant interference, and NO loud pops or clicks or distortion.
It really sounds great and plays with great sound separation and clarity Superb sound, every track has been tested and I could find no obvious sound blemishes.
Some light occasional static only, and it is light and very occasional.
Wonderful TOP audio, there is certainly NO distortion, NO sticks or jumps what so ever.
This vinyl is an absolute gem Great music with great clarity, and so hard to find with this type of sound.
I will give a detailed account below: Starting with Listen, Learn, Read On , there is some slight static in the run ins, followed by really loud great audio.
No pops clicks or distortion, just bright clear, incredibly powerful and loud sound.
Wring That Neck , again sounds superb.
The vocals are really loud and incredibly clear.
There are no pops or click and NO static.
Kentucky Woman again plays with superb audio, bright and powerful.
There are certainly no obvious issue like loud pops or clicks, just superb clear audio.
Exposition again plays with super clear sound followed by We Can Work It Out which also plays superbly.
One of the really difficult tacks on the album, audio wise, again sounds super clear, with none of the blurring that this track.
Amazing clear sound and no loud clicks or interference at all, which is extremely unusually for this track, juts a couple of light pops in the middle.
Finishing side 1, the sound continuous the high standard, with bright clear rockous sound and barely any detectable static what so ever.
Side 2.
continues the rockous sound with Shield , it plays again with super bright audio, and near silent run ins.
Unbelievable.
It really takes you back to the early origins of Deep Purple, and plays with no pops clicks, and certainly not a hint of distortion anywhere.
The vocal comes in on this pressings with unusual clarity and super bright sound.
Anthem just plays superbly, there is a little static between the tracks but it is so slight.
Superb River Deep MountainHigh powers in with super clear sound, and still not a single noticeable loud pop or click, this really is a great audio performance.
I am delighted to say that this track plays brilliantly, with great clear audio, incredibly loud, rounding off a stunning audio performance.
The tonal quality make this a sensational pressing.
With the clear and extra loud First cut engineering giving the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten.
Staggering first stereo mix, unlike the re-issues which lack the impact.
A great all round, truly stunning example of this great vinyl.
A great all round example of this classic vinyl.
This is a great Audio pleasure and I would give the audio a NEAR MINT grading.
THE RECORD A lovely piece of glossy vinyl with deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings, this vinyl has been barely played.
The record has great shine, with no scratches, just some ultra light handling marks / paper removal marks.
This is a really stunning example.
Graded at NEAR MINT.
VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING: Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.
THE LABELS Both labels are in great condition.
Virtually NO spindle traces what so ever.
Maybe one tiny one on side 2.
and a couple of tiny traces on side 1.
are the only thing that would lead you to believe that this vinyl has ever been played, and even these traces are barley visible.
Stunning.
Graded at NEAR MINT.
THE COVERCover art and sleeve notes convey Tetragrammaton s decision to aim the album at the vast American hippie audience, which was very influential in the US at the time.
The notes in particular were written in a mystical tone, evoking the bard Taliesyn as a spiritual guide and comparing listening to the songs to an exploration in the band members souls.
The original cover was drawn in pen, ink and colour by the British illustrator and author John Vernon Lord, who coincidentally appears to share the same name as Deep Purple s keyboard player.
The Book of Taliesyn was the only record cover John Vernon Lord ever designed and, according to the artist s recent retrospective book Drawing upon Drawing, the original artwork was never returned.
This is a rare vinyl and it is virtually impossible to find decent examples of this rare cover.
The laminate is prone to cracking and lifting, with serious ring wear and destruction to the edges.
The laminated back is usually heavily marked and the spines are nearly always flattened, worn and un readable.
Not this one Being the second Deep Purple album, it is extremely hard to find original covers in anything like great condition.
This is a lovely example with virtually NO corner wear and only a couple of very light creasing to the laminate.
The white areas are very white, with no blemishes.
The back cover is nice and clean, with no discernible ring wear, which is very unusual for these delicate covers, just some very slight discolouration.
The Spine shows virtually no wear, the spine text is totally intact, and is one of the squarer examples I have seen.
All round, this is a really stunning and truly unique cover.Graded at NEAR MINT.
THE INNER This fabulous pressing comes the original fragile paper picture inner.
In VERY GOOD PLUS to EXCELLENT condition, NO tears, and NO wear at the tops.
RARITY An original pressing of The Book of Taliesyn in this type of condition is incredibly rare.
The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound, and it was a vinyl released in very small quantities.
UK 1st pressings are getting rarer by the day.
Finding one in all round great is impossible.
A 1st pressing with audio quality like this, and a gleaming vinyl and top cover makes this an EXTREMELY rare opportunity.
With UNMARKED labels, original picture inner sleeve and a stunning cover makes this an incredible rarity.
A truly wonderful and extremely rare pressing of this classic early DEEP PURPLE album.
MAKING THIS A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY TO OWN AN EXTREMELY RARE PIECE OF MUSICAL HISTORY.
