PERHAPS BEST DESCRIBED AS A FOLD OUT POSTER, AT APPROXIMATELY, 28 inches LONG 12 INCHES WIDE.

Ltd.
I can accurately place the pressing in 1973 because after March,1973, EMI introduced two new items, the above label rim text and a new design for their inner sleeves, outside of promotional LP picture inner s, it was the first major change since 1966.
As an unplayed true Mint record and I can say for certain it was inside this inner sleeve since first being inserted in EMI s pressing plant in 1973, I will describe and grade that shortly.
Another adjustment label text in March, 1973, Made In Gt.
Britain was relocated from 6 o clock to the end of the copyright line, at 4 o clock.
A logical placement, EMI s labels settled into position and after the upheaval at the end of the 1960 s, the vinyl remained exactly the same and only printing amendments gave an indication was the second pressing.
After all, only eleven months had passed since the 8th April, 1972 release and with the UK consecutive chart residence of 24 weeks, Machine Head did not leave the charts until October, 1972.
So no surprise to find such a closely connected second pressing like this, in a first issue 1972 gatefold cover, complete with the first edition lyric insert or poster.
There was no difference between April - October, 1972 EMI vinyl, and a March, 1973 record, an unplayed 43 year old record is extremely rare.
I always feel it is very important to place the correct perspective onto how directly connected vinyl pressings actually are.
Please see this record s machine stamping for confirmation of that statement, the pressing details of Machine Head are very typical of all EMI s meticulous indexing, particularly during the 1960 s and 1970 s.

Blank or just too faintly stamped to see Even without one side s mother digit, the above maitrix is without any doubt a direct continuation of the 1972 pressings, then the first mother on one side has to be taken into consideration.
I am certain the missing mother digit would have been very low, if not another 1 digit.
As I have have demonstrated with countless Beatles singles, EP s and LP s, first mothers were not necessarily used in strict order or sequence, hence the mixture of mother numbers per individual side of the same record.
I will move on and return to this fascinating record s machine stamping, yes, a second pressing by virtue of the label rim text, but except for the inner sleeve, everything else associated with this cover, poster and machine stamping in the run-out grooves of the record, are very firmly rooted in 1972.

THE FRONT HAS A PURPLE BORDER TO A LIGHT PURPLE OR MAUVE BACKGROUND TO PURPLE PRINTING, THE PRINTED SIDE HAS A SEMI-GLOSSY SHEEN.

75 The above could have been written for the first pressing insert in April, 1972, like the gatefold cover, this originated in 1972 and has never been used or handled.
The semi-glossy posters were exclusive to the 1972 first editions, they had the TPS 7504 UK catalogue number printed in the top right corner, obviously any left over from the final charting period, October, 1972, were used up for some of these March, 1973 pressings.
Untorn, unscuffed, unaged, with perfectly crisp edges and corners, allowing for being inside with the record because the 1972 front compartment was sealed, just a few ripples and a record impression.

I could have just said I know 1972 first edition gatefold covers through sheer experience as a professional record seller of long standing, plus I bought my original in April, 1972, because since the 1970 In Rock LP, I stayed with this line-up s latest albums.
Facts avoid just giving opinions but at least my opinions are based on personal first hand experience and I know my way around items like 1970 s EMI inner sleeves blindfolded.
The cover was never used and perfectly stored inside a plastic outer sleeve for every day of it s 43 years of age, well, 44 years of age if including sitting in EMI s warehouse since 1972.
There is no ageing, including a white background to the inside panels which look untouched.
Just the usual glue edge of the lamination s finishing position on the top and bottom edges affecting the printing, but too minimally too mention.
What fantastic ultra glossy lamination,completely undulled, when angled there are a few single line impressions, they hardly show at a normal position because the artwork s reflected band picture has lines that could be interpreted as actual on the top surface, they are under the laminate and positively part of the photograph taken of the reflective material..not the cover.
The first mentioned few single line impressions are on the cover, not from the original glass like original photograph, plus the usual record impression formed over all those decades, as I constantly say, I can and do locate incredible condition records, but I cannot hold back the passage of time s impact on the cardboard covers.
Related to holding the record and an impression, some positive edge laminate lines and a few laminate crinkles where the record s contours have created them.
Light rubbing to the spine ends is yet another standing in storage trait, at this point I always add a reminder this cover has been holding an ultra rare unplayed record for 43 years.
There are more positive s than negative s here, the sheer quality of the 1972 lamination remains as glossy and mirror like, as the day it was made, a superb Garrod Lofthouse 1972 gatefold cover and I have been deliberately critical, so please see the pictures for the reality of this original Machine Head cover and remember it is 2016 now A TRULY BEAUTIFUL COVER IN MINT- CONDITION.
JUST LIKE THE 1972 LABELS, THEY HAVE THE SAME TEXTURED FINISH AROUND THE WHITE SPINDLE HOLES, YET AGAIN MY PICTURES ARE BEST SEEN TO APPRECIATE THE REMARKABLE CONDITION.
POSITIVELY NONE OF THE USUAL YELLOWING OR STAINS ON ANY OF THE LARGE WHITE LETTER P.
THE ROUNDED TOP OF THE P FORMS THE WHITE CIRCLE AROUND THE CENTRE HOLE, I AM INCLUDING THE REST OF THE LETTER THAT CARRIES ON TO THE OUTSIDE RIM OF THE LABELS.
THERE ARE NO SPINDLE ALIGNMENT TRACES OR ANY MARKS, SCUFFS OR SCRATCHES ON THE GLEAMING LIKE NEW VINYL.

Produced By Deep Purple I can only really sum up the mountain of details given as I worked through all the individual items and discuss a few key points.
The record was pressed only approximately 11 months after the very first made records, but because this was a UK No.1 album with a 6 months 24 week chart residency, in reality the figure narrows to becoming only six months after the last records were made for the period within the charts.
Had this been a Beatles album in the 1960 s decade with at least a chart duration of one year, it would have been part of the consecutive pressings, therefore an original, the 1960 s were still only just over the horizon in the early 70 s and that was an accurate comment.
Anyway, 43 years old or 44 years old, is hardly worth discussing when EMI s mastering, pressing and vinyl were exactly the same, without the label rim text change, this would be impossible to tell apart from the initial or the 6 months of pressings.
Side 1 has the same TPS 7504 A - 1U maitrix as the very first pressings and Side 2 has only risen two digits, plus the gatefold cover and lyric poster are identical to those issued in April,1972, as pointed out, they originated in 1972.
Label text changes or not, unused covers being utilised until gone, was common for all record companies in the 60 s and nothing had changed in 1972.
Economic restraints in the 1970 s decade, was growing into a worldwide recession, and even if the mentioned line impressions happened in packaging and storage, by 1973 the position had now worsened out of all recognition.
I do not believe the cover was abused, the unplayed record and ultra glossy lamination tell a very different story about the circumstances in the Spring of 1973.
Those my age will remember that well, I do not stoop to excuses, I lived through that era of doom and gloom, why albums like Machine Head were so important.
I just realised I have forgotten to include an important credit unique to the UK.
The mother digit on one Side is 1 , as I commented earlier, the unstamped side would have been very low if not another 1 digit.
Not that I need it with such a low maitrix, this is a 100 first generation Master Tape mastering and pressing, the rarity of an unplayed,1973 Machine Head, has to take priority over my keenness and love of hearing ultimate condition records I m starting to have second thoughts about hearing it, if only for that side opener on Side 2, what a joy to experience that astonishing impact right from the intro to the glorious ending piece with psychedelic phasing on Ian s drums.
Then I know this amazing album will have audio perfection to compliment the loud and powerful mastering.
Smoke On The Water would have my walls shaking from the unbelievable sound of a true Mint record, how many early 1970 s Machine Head records are still in this condition? I better stick to album info instead, Deep Purple set out to record the album in December,1971, at Montreux Casino, Switzerland, using the Rolling Stones mobile studio.
With Ian Gillan unwell, an America tour was postponed until he fully recovered, the band still set off to Montreux where the hotel had been booked anyway.
Events now took over, when Frank Zappa And The Mothers performed a concert at Montreux Casino, some stupid person in the audience fired a flare gun up into the roof and a resulting raging fire immediately started to spread, the building had to be evacuated, luckily safely without any casualties.
Meanwhile, Deep Purple had lost their venue and instead moved to a local theatre,The Pavilion, with the tapes rolling, they began playing a brand new riff, that riff would become one of the greatest rock songs of all time, Smoke On The Water , the lyrics I typed earlier contain this story and were inspired by watching the flames destroy the Casino, if you look inside the gatefold cover there is picture of the building engulfed by flames.
One day I will find a Mint 1972 first pressing, but in 15 years on ebay I have yet to locate one and refuse to offer a worn out average condition.
Machine Head is a much loved Deep Purple album, the same sentiments include the line-up who recorded it, I am thrilled to list this stunning record on ebay in the ultimate condition.
