ORIGINAL 1970 SWIRL VERTIGO ..
CLEAR BLUE SKY UK - SWIRL VERTIGO - 6360-013 M- VINYL PLAYS CLEAN INCLUDES THE ORIGINAL SWIRL VERTIGO INNER SLEEVE Highly sought 1970 BRITISH first pressing in delightfully designed gatefold cover and on the VERTIGO SWIRL label ....CLEAR BLUE SKY delivers a powerful mix of HARD HEAVY psychy progressive rock that reaches galactic proportions Patrick Campbell-Lyons was responsible for producing some of Vertigo s most fascinating releases.
Among them was the debut album from Clear Blue Sky, which in my own estimation rates as the label s finest work.
The band was a three piece from Acton England, who were only 18 years old when the album was issued in 1971.
Their album is now very collectable, and they are easily the match of any of their contemporaries.
Listening to this spectacularly ignored 1970 offering with the benefit of hindsight one could say that Clear Blue Sky was either visionary geniuses, or lucky amateurs who picked a good day to rent the studio.
Barely out of high school, this guitar-driven power trio delivers an inventive set of neo-prog psychedelic blues-heaviness...
Overall, the CLEAR BLUE SKY album is an engagingly eclectic offering.
Their name may make one think space rock .
Although following the power trio format popular of the time, their sound is actually quite distinctive with a definite psych/prog crossover element.
As it says on the spine of the original LP Play It Loud ...The side long track Journey To The Inside Of The Sun has some great interplay, and considering these lads were only 18 at the time, it is quite an achievement.
The first part of this epic, Sweet Leaf, has some good boogie-blues action, interspersed with quieter psychy phases, follwed by Rocket Ride, played in a growling bluesrock ala Groundhogs style.
The track finishes with I m Coming Home which although a little disjointed is still a decent work out.
Side 2 starts with the great You Mystify, with some basic time changes and lots of reverb on the chorus vocals.
A great bit of guitar wizardry too.
Tools Of My Trade is very Cream like in places, but with enough style of its own to shine.
builds nicely in the middle section.
Things slow down for My Heaven which is the most psychedlic of all the songs and has some nice instrumentation.
The closer Birdcatcher, has good riffage and a very odd ending fading away with flute and lazy hand clapping.
Very stoned.
As with most Vertigo acts of the time virtually nothing was spent on promotion and unfortunately Clear Blue Sky did not get the chance to develop as they should have done, and split up soon after ...Really, this brand of prog psych, with its raw rock crunch, spacey atmospheres and folk-y trimmings - reflects a truly hip sound -- one that is obviously well worth checking out - John Simms / guitar - Ken White / drums - Mark Sheather / bass Side I Journey to the Inside of the Sun 18:20 Side II You Mystify 7:45 Tool of My Trade 4:50 My Heaven 5:00 Birdcatcher 4:10 CONDITION: The cover: fragile UK gatefold: rated VG front cover, back cover VG spotting and inside gatefold rated: M- Overall the cover is extremely hard to find clean what with the fact it s white and 45 years onward.
Here there are No bends, no writing and no split seams ...
The vinyl: Rated: near M- real clean over both sides, may actually be a straight M- grade filled with bright shine, playback was with very enjoyable CLEAN audio ...
both SWIRL VERTIGO labels are clean A cool addition to anyone s music library SEE: SELLERS OTher items for similar cool sounds for head people...
