Item Description

MARY LONG Ritchie Blackmore / Ian Gillan / Roger Glover / Jon Lord / Ian Paice, Late 1972.
Mary Long is a hypocrite, She does all the things that she tells us not to do.
Selling filth from a corner shop, And knitting patterns to the high street queue.
She paints roses, even makes them smell good, And then she draws titties on the kharzie wall, Drowns kittens just to get a thrill, And writes sermons in the Sunday Chronicle.
How did you lose your virginity, Mary Long? When will you lose your stupidity, Mary Long? Mary told Johnny not to write such trash, Said it was a waste of public money, But she made a fuss, they made apologies, But everybody thought the show was funny.
When the nation knew you d had children, It came as such a surprise, We really didn t know you d had it in you, How you did it, we can only surmise.
How did you lose your virginity, Mary Long? When will you lose your stupidity, Mary Long? Mary Long, you re not alone, But you re a long way behind our times, What we do in full frontal view, Is more honest than your clean-up mind.
What I m saying, Mary Long is, When you can spare a minute, Go find your friend, the porny Lord, Dig yourself a hole...
and jump in it How did you lose your virginity, Mary Long? When will you lose your stupidity, Mary Long? How did you lose your virginity, Mary Long? When will you lose your stupidity, Mary Long? Mary Long, Mary Long, Mary Long, Mary Long, Mary Long, Mary.
DEEP PURPLE: Who Do We Think We Are LP, UK VERY FIRST PRESSING, ISSUED 10th FEBRUARY,1973.
AS THE VERY FIRST PRESSING THE LABELS RIM TEXT IS The Gramophone Co.
Ltd.
AT 10 O CLOCK ALL IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING 1973 AND LATER 1970 s PRESSINGS HAVE EMI Record Company.
THE FIRST PRESSING LABELS STILL HAVE AT 6 O CLOCK Made In Gt.
Britain.
Only four weeks after Who Do We Think We Are was released, EMI deleted The Gramophone Co.
Ltd.
label rim text and changed it to EMI Record Company.
Due to the heavy plays and damage to the music signals, I have mostly sold the later pressings and I am delighted to finally offer a very first pressing in the ultimate unplayed, true Mint condition.
TEXTURED PURPLE RECORDS LABEL: TPSA 7508 .
The white sections include the entire area around the spindle hole, so normally grubby and stained from constant handling, not on this pair of first issue labels The have same pure white first seen 42 years ago and are without any ageing and positively no spindle alignment traces, an amazing unplayed Who Do We Think We Are.
The first I have personally seen since....1973.
MAITRIX: TPSA 7508 A - 1U / TPSA 7508 B - 1U That was the starting point of the pressings and the digits after the letter U would rise and rise, a very first pressing.
ALSO IN THE RUN-OUT GROOVES ARE THE TWO LOGO S OF GEORGE PECKHAM, THE UK S FINEST VINYL MASTERING SOUND ENGINER, THE ACTUAL RECORDING ENGINEER WAS MARTIN BIRCH.
NO WONDER THE FIRST UK PRESSINGS HAVE SUCH INCREDIBLE SOUND QUALITY SIDE 1,HANDWRITTEN: PORKY SIDE 2, HANDWRITTEN: PURPLE PECKIE EMI STAMPING CODES: MA 2 / MR 4 FIRST ISSUE, 12 x 12 LYRICS INSERT, THE FRONT IS PRINTED ON SEMI-GLOSSY PURPLE PAPER, AND PLAIN WHITE ON THE BACK.
Like the record, the insert has never been outside the cover, not used or handled, uncreased, unscuffed unaged with perfectly crisp edges and corners.
Allowing for being inside with the record because the front compartment was sealed, a light impression only and therefore as close to brand new it possibly gets.
THE FIRST ISSUE ONLY, Who Do We Think We Are INSERT IS IN MINT- CONDITION.
ORIGINAL 1973, EMI / Purple LABEL INNER SLEEVE, AS I DESCRIBED FOR A 1973 PRESSING OF In Rock ONLY LAST WEEK.
A NEW DESIGN EMI POLY-LINED INNER SLEEVE, INTENDED TO REPLACE THE Harvest LABEL TYPE PROMOTING LP S IN BLACK WHITE PICTURES, WHICH EXPLAINS THE POLY-LINING.
The late 1969 - early 1970 albums pictured had never been brought up to date and EMI added a die cut centre, but no longer with any pictures of LP covers.
All the Patent Numbers etc.
were in place and they never made many, they were often used for labels such as Purple and Who Do We Think We Are was of course the current 1973 album.
AS AN UNPLAYED RECORD I CAN STATE THIS IS THE ACTUAL SLEEVE IT WAS FIRST PLACED INSIDE AT EMI S PRESSING PLANT.
Unused, unsplit and unworn with a record impression and a few related light creases and a touch of natural ageing after 42 years.
THE INNER SLEEVE IS IN UNUSED, NEAR MINT CONDITION.
Garrod Lofthouse PRINTED GATEFOLD COVER, WITH DELUXE THICK, VERY GLOSSY LAMINATION OUTSIDE, THE FIRST EDITION SHAPE FEATURES THE TOP FRONT WITH A BOWED SHAPE, AS SEEN IN MY PICTURE WHERE THE LIGHT REFLECTION PERFECTLY PICKED OUT THE TOP FRONT S DISTINCTIVE SHAPE.
INSIDE THE GATEFOLD , THIS INCLUDES EMI s 1960 s TEXT AS FOUND ON THE DEBUT 1968 LP, Shades Of Deep Purple.
File Under - POPULAR Pop Groups - Printed on the bottom corner inside the gatefold s right panel bottom right corner.
NEXT TO THE Garrod Lofthouse CREDIT IS THE DATE THE COVER WAS PRINTED 7302 February, 1973.
THE INSIDE HAS A COLLAGE OF BLACK WHITE BAND MUSIC NEWSPAPER HEADLINES AND STORIES.
MAYBE WHITE SHOULD BE MORE ACCURATE, THEY ARE ACTUAL NEWSPAPER SOURCED AND THE COLOUR IS A PALE GREY COLOUR THE DELUXE QUALITY OF THE COVER, INCLUDING ULTRA GLOSSY LAMINATION ON THE OUTSIDE, UNUSED AND PERFECTLY STORED, THE LAMINATE IS STILL ULTRA GLOSSY OVER UNFADED, DEEP COLOURS OF THE SUPERB ARTWORK.
The cover was never unused and was perfectly stored inside a plastic outer sleeve for every day of it s 42 years of age, there is no wear or ageing to any part of the gatefold cover, it has fantastic ultra glossy lamination, untouched and undulled.
1970 s deluxe thick lamination cannot avoid being molded around the circular shape of the record, I introduced the expression record impression to ebay and matt covers also had to be affected by the record s internal position.
Thick cardboard, particularly laminated 60 s early 70 s gatefold covers, also a few associated laminate edge lines were formed naturally and certainly not from use or abuse when an unplayed record is involved I do find it absurd almost apologising for offering an ultimate condition very firs pressing of Who Do We Think We Are, for the unused cover, record, lyrics insert and even the inner sleeve, common sense and logic dictates I declare all four items as Mint condition, because they are My pictures should show the impression of the record but dark, almost black background covers reflect light back, so I decided to very unfairly downgrade the cover.
Regular vinyl collector s will say, So what, that was perfectly normal, , so do I for natural events, in fact, I could even say the cover was like most, assembled and stuck together at a slight angle, so I had better drop the grading One day someone will have overhaul the stupidity of an inflexible grading system, if anyone wants my experience and input, I am ready, willing able For now I have to operate within the globally accepted system that suits sellers, who genuinely believe Mint does not exist and only sealed albums are worthy of naming Mint , they even write that on their templates Unbelievable, once again that is because they deal almost exclusively in V.G./Excellent records, that in reality fail to measure up to the explicit definitions of the once well intended Record Collector system.
A sealed/shrink wrapped album is just as likely to have exactly the same effect in 2015, as I just described for this 1973 true Mint album, because the same scenario applies to unremoved records in any constricted plastic material HAVING GOT THAT OFF MY CHEST, WITH A DEEP SIGH, MY GRADING IS EXCELLENT / NEAR MINT CONDITION.
Do look at my pictures for the reality of a Near Mint, unused cover THE RECORD IS IN UNPLAYED, MINT CONDITION.
SIDE 1 Woman From Tokyo Mary Long Super Trouper Smooth Dancer SIDE 2 Rat Bat Blue Place In Line Our Lady DEEP PURPLE Mark II /Second Line-Up Ian Gillan - vocals Ritchie Blackmore - guitar Jon Lord - organ keyboards Roger Glover - bass Ian Paice - drums Recorded On The Rolling Stones Mobile Unit In July 1972 In Rome, Italy, October 1972 In Frankfurt, Germany.
All Tracks Written By Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord Ian Paice.
Produced By Deep Purple As Above I think I said all that was needed about the condition of all four first isue only items, my opinions were formed when LP s like this were first released and unlike later generations, I know exactly how they were first bought, I have literally spent every passing decade ever since, hunting for that day of issue condition.
I get pretty close and that includes records, sleeves and covers from as far back as 1963, ten years before Who Do We Think We Are even saw the light of day, so please excuse the frustrations of producing an ultimate and rare condition for this album, then having to grade it as if there was wear involved.
In fact, the longer I sit here describing the album, the odds are I will change that crazy cover grading to Mint- , an unplayed record like this will be left without me playing it, so a short description is all that is required anyway.
I forgot to mention my pictures of the key identification points, I compiled the maitrix pair into one picture and George Perckham s scribed logo s, Side 1 s PORKY and Side 2 s PURPLE PECKIE are also together in one picture.
It does bring them together in one picture but it takes longer to get the pictures ready, with only 12 available I have to select the most important items and make sure to give potential buyers the clearest views.
So many factors affect taking pictures of highly reflective items and they are never easy to take, you can only ever do your best.
Right, some brief album details, after the 1972 Machine Head , the line-up of Deep Purple affectionately known as Mark 2 , recorded what would turn out to be their final album, allowing for reforming in 1984 of course.
One slip and I get an email or two If you think this is easy for a worldwide internet, try it some time, it really is daunting to even attempt the basic s but I can only do my best and I rely on memories, very clear ones though.
For anyone new to the band s 1970 s albums, although they used the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, this was not one of the many live Deep Purple album, they were following a new trend, recording studio albums in various countries around the world.
In the summer of 1972, Rome was the location and it was completed on the Stones Mobile Studio in Frankfurt, October of the same year.
I suppose the most loved track would be Woman From Tokyo , one of the earliest tracks recorded in that summer and it was written about their first tour of Japan.
I know many fans immediately look backwards to the previous albums, they were very special but Who Do We Think We Are was as well, just because the sales were lower it did not reflect on the material or the band s performances, personally I love the whole LP and had to make a hard choice about which lyrics to represent it with.
Perhaps Mary Long has been overlooked because the track does not register as being very funny, the name was a pun on a real lady named Mary Whitehouse who took it upon herself to campaign against anything hinting at the so called promiscuous 1960 s.
With a steely determination to purge all our sins by stopping any hint of nudity, sex or swearing ever being allowed to corrupt us on the radio, television or any other media.
Perhaps if that was unknown, re-read the lyrics and re-listen to the track and it will all fall into place.
As I was saying, the line-up generally regarded as the ultimate Deep Purple were at their very peak and recorded a stunning album, the actual sound had the fullest dynamics and that created a truly outstanding record.
Sunming up the importance of the first pressings, with so many details required to qualify, few actually are How many Deep purple fans know to look for Gramophone on the label rims? I must avoid going through that lot again, but you will only hear the stunning sound on a first pressing and as the final album by Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice, that s worth hearing at it s most potent and another reason I get frustrated about down grading a really beautiful unworn cover.
Vocalist Ian Gillan left just after this LP was issued, the reasons are unknown really, rumours blamed individuals in the band, the management and constant touring, perhaps a little of everything led to Ian walking away.
Roger Glover picked up his bass and did likewise, that was the negative side but the album itself contained real gems like Place In Line and Rat Bat Blue , the incredible Our Lady found the band at that peak of creativity, it was a shame Ian left because his vocals on Our Lady were as inspired as Jon Lord s superb organ on the track, I would have loved playing and describing the album in full.
Roy R M RECORDS.
My lifetime s love of music and records began at a very young age, the arrival of the Beatles and the 1960 s decade in general had a very profound effect.
It was only natural to bring all my first hand experience of collecting vinyl into becoming a professional record seller.
Nearly thirty years ago we entered into the wonderful atmosphere of record fairs with the highest possible standards set.
When the Internet became the world s new market place for vinyl, in 2001 it was time to join ebay.
Those standards were rigidly adhered to as they will always continue to be, the basics of honesty and integrity were very much part of the era the music I love originated in, so here is our friendly and very efficient service we are proud to provide EVERY RECORD IS FULLY PLAYED AND COMES WITH A NO ARGUMENT MONEY BACK GUARANTEE.
I USE GOOD OLD COMMON SENSE AS WELL AS A GLOBALLY ACCEPTED GRADING TERMINOLOGY FROM THE U.K.
RECORD COLLECTOR PRICE GUIDE BOOK.
THERE IT CLEARLY STATES Sound Quality AFFECTS EVERY GRADING LEVEL AND THAT IS THE ONE AND ONLY POSSIBLE WAY TO ACCURATELY GRADE RECORDS.
i.e.
COMBINING A STRICT VISUAL INSPECTION WITH VERY CLOSELY LISTENING TO EVERY SECOND, UNLESS PERHAPS IN THE CASE OF GENUINELY UNPLAYED VINYL.

We have kept all our charges at the same level for years now, but due to the Post Office s new price increases, regretfully we will have to increase the cost of LP s, however, singles will remain unchanged.
Ebay were aware of that happening and have increased their minimum postal cost for LP s to 7.00, that figure has been enforced by the UK Post Office and it will become our UK First Class, Recorded Delivery cost for albums up to the value of 46.
A temporary reduction this week means we can now post LP s for 5, but who knows how long before the Post Office return to 7? For LP s valued above 46, the cost will be 9, we are unhappy about either increase but our high standard of packaging has meant in 13 years of ebay trading, there has not been one record damaged, we are determined to maintain that in the present and future.
