Stepping further away from the group s louder roots in the Action and taking in everything from an embrace of Sufism to further explorations ranging from Gram Parsons and the Band s country-rock to jazz and obscure folk, A Jug of Love is all the more remarkable for being a rushed effort, recorded in barely a week s time.
But the group s strength in performing together for years served it well, and the resultant album is still a classic as it stands.
Certainly anyone familiar with the Byrds and Spirit, to name two groups among many, won t be surprised by the end result, but the bandmembers themselves freely admitted to the influence the cover is surely a nod to Fifth Dimension, at least , and songs like the gentle gospel-blues of the title track and the mandolin-tinged Slipstreams speak to it clearly.
Moments like the beautiful buried harmonies that help open The Happiest Man in the Carnival and the subtle interplay of the musicians during the extended instrumental break on Virgin Spring, at over nine minutes the longest of the album s tracks, show the band s evident talent well in hand.
Even the fairly straightforward boogie of Keep On Juggin works well instead of simply killing time, thanks in part to a fantastic extended coda.

2931 001 Disc is difficult to grade overall as playback is variable.
Please read the following carefully: The vinyl shows visible surface wear and scuffing in places.
I have played it through and it does not skip although there is noticeable surface noise during quiet bits , and some audible clicks and pops throughout.
SIDE ONE: Some sections are affected by wear worse than others.
Jug Of Love shows a lot of surface noise early on, and later reveals repeated clicking due to a surface scratch beginning midway through.
The very end of Jug Of Love and first section of The Happiest Man...
are particularly affected by surface scratches.
These sections I would grade as G-.
Some later sections of The Happiest Man...
also reveal surface noise and clicks.
Playback improves towards the end of The Happiest Man...
through Keep On Juggin although there is still noticeable background crackle at points .
The latter half of Side 1 I would grade as VG.
SIDE TWO: Again, the first minute or so of Side 2 is affected by some clicking surface scratches which I would have to grade as G-.
Playback improves quickly on this side, from about a minute into Virgin Spring onward.
The rest of Side 2, I would say plays VG- to VG, with some noticeable surface noise and pops at times .
