V- Noisy, One groove in announcement sometimes skips, sometimes not 2.7 mil conical stylus . No repeating grooves. Center hole wear. Plain back. Label color duller than in photo.
This coon song is copyright 1900, probably early, as Quinn s Victor 7 A-114, was recorded June 29, 1900. It was recorded again on Feb 2, 1901 on a Victor 10 and on cylinder as well about this time. DAHR lists no further disc recordings of this title past 1901.
Sutton s American Record Labels and Companies. An Encyclopedia 1891-1943 , published in 2000, gives the probable dates of this company as 1902-1904. Since the song fell out of use by 1901, at least for recording purposes, this record may indicate the first date of the company could be pushed back at least a year . Sutton says that the masters were pirated directly from commercial Victor pressings by electroplating.
If that is so for this example, getting the announcement substituting the American Talking Machine company name in just the right place for that of Victor shows remarkable expertise. So this record is probably earlier than Sutton s starting date and is also probably recorded by American rather than being a dub of a Victor.
Sued by Victor, American was enjoined October, 1904. A very, very scarce label and, among its pirated label mates, a rare original.
Once the pianist gets into synch with Quinn about half way through, there s some good playing in the ragtime style with nice elaboration.
