VINYL CONDITION : visually VG with lovely high gloss surface, but plays VG- due to surface noise. some minor dirt spots surface marks, no chipping or damage to acetate playing surface. some sort of residue at outer edge one tiny edge chip, neither entering the playing surface. some minor storage dust so could use a professional cleaning. hand-typed labels. though the recording fidelity is quite nice, its a low volume cut plays with consistent but varying significant surface noise, not uncommon to the acetate medium. a professional cleaning may well improve payback. NOTES : extremely rare ACETATE lp, clearly marked as FOR REFERENCE ONLY on label. this is likely the only surviving lp copy of these sessions, from the ESOTERIC SOUND STUDIOS, new york city, november 1960. these were duo sessions featuring ERIC DOLPHY on flute, bass clarinet, alto sax, and RON CARTER on bass bass fiddle. this material remained completely unreleased at the time, and as far as we know this acetate is undocumented possibly previously unknown to have existed at all. this is of course the prime early era of dolphy s career, recorded just shortly after his OUT THERE lp. in all likelihood this is the only vintage production of these recordings outside of the original master tapes.
4 of the 5 tracks from this acetate later surfaced on archival releases NAIMA JAZZWAY MUTT-1502 - 1987 OTHER ASPECTS BLUE NOTE BT 85131 - 1987 . on this acetate TRIPLE MIX is titled, and would keep the same title when later released. 3 of the 4 other tracks are here left untitled, but were later issued under the titles DOLPHY-N , INNER FLIGHT 1 , and INNER FLIGHT 2 . the eventual 1987 release of these tracks were, we believe, taken from the original master tapes, so it is very likely that all the material on this disc features at least a slightly different mix from those later versions. there is of course the possibility that this version contains more or less music due to editing, or that these are in fact different takes from the released versions, although we believe they are the same. there is, at the very least, some minor between track studio chatter present here which surely was not included on any later release. this acetate also features a 5th track credited on the label as RON CARTER - SOLO BASS BLUES which we do not believe has ever been released.
a truly rare and important historical jazz artifact, that belongs in a serious collection / archive where it can be properly cleaned, stored, and cared for. please contact us with any additional information.
