The Beatles in mono: This is how most listeners first heard the group in the 1960s, when mono was the predominant audio format. Up until 1968, each Beatles album was given a unique mono and stereo mix, but the group always regarded the mono as primary. The Beatles nine U.K. albums, the American-compiled Magical Mystery Tour, and the Mono Masters collection of non-album tracks are released in mono on 180-gram vinyl LPs with faithfully replicated artwork. Newly mastered from the analogue master tapes, all 11 album are available in a lavish, limited 14-LP boxed edition, The Beatles In Mono, which also includes a 108-page hardbound book.
In an audiophile-minded undertaking, The Beatles acclaimed mono albums have been newly mastered for vinyl from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by GRAMMY -winning engineer Sean Magee and GRAMMY -winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz. While The Beatles In Mono CD boxed set released in 2009 was created from digital remasters, for this new vinyl project, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records without using any digital technology. Instead, they employed the same procedures used in the 1960s, guided by the original albums and by detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers.
Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of The Beatles albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe.
Manufactured for the world at Optimal Media in Germany, The Beatles albums are presented in their original glory, both sonically and in their packaging. The boxed collection s exclusive 12-inch by 12-inch hardbound book features new essays and a detailed history of the mastering process by award-winning radio producer and author Kevin Howlett. The book is illustrated with many rare studio photos of The Beatles, fascinating archive documents, and articles and advertisements sourced from 1960s publications.
The albums are presented in their original glory, both sonically and in their packaging. The 180 gram records, pressed at Optimal in Germany for world-wide distribution, were mastered at Abbey Road Studios using the original analogue master tapes played back on a mono headstock, preview-head equipped, Studer A80. No dynamic compression and minimal equalization will hopefully produce the best ever sounding Beatles reissues.
The jackets look fantastic-nothing like the stereo box set s unreasonable facsimile. These are fold over laminated, with opaque paper on the back very close to the originals right down to the Garrod and Lofthouse printer credit. The reproduction of the artwork appears to be spot-on and though the video shows The Beatles jacket opening to the side, the actual jacket will be top loading just like the original...Steve Berkowitz said he took the records out of the shipping box and played them in Los Angeles and they were flat, shiny and dead silent and that they were. All LPs were pressed at Optimal for worldwide distribution. But most of all, what makes these remasters special is the warmth of the vinyl period details that evoke the same sensations as muscle cars or the swish of miniskirts in film clips of 60s street scenes - an intangible memory flash, a tantalizing tug of nostalgia that brings back the summer days when the high-pitched sound at the end of Long Long Long would wake up your childhood dog or the fade-out of She Said She Said reflexively told you it was time to get up and flip the album. These records bring an impressively and affordably vintage Beatles listening experience, even if you re using a Crosley rather than a 1960s-era Close N Play record player. At best, for younger fans it s a more authentic experience than the past couple of generations have had for those longer in the tooth, it s like finding photos from your childhood that you d never seen before. -NPR
This was how The Beatles heard themselves, and what comes across strongly is the sense of indivisible unity they convey. Shortly after, stereo would usher in overdubbing and an emphasis on individual ability that tore groups apart. I found the collection oft revealing, and I was exposed to nooks and crannies lost or rendered muddy when compressed for FM radio broadcast or heard on those horrible first compact disc versions. On the proper gear and heard in an acoustically decent room or on noncrappy headphones, sounds pop and erupt from the mono albums with a force that suggests not just a hot band hitting its peak but a producer hitting his as well, both harnessing high-tech gear to great effect.

The wait is finally over, The Beatles catalog is getting the audiophile treatment Almost 23 years have passed since the Beatles catalog has been released on CD, and these mono mixes are definitely worth the wait.
This Beatles Mono Box Set has been created with the collector in mind. The Beatles in Mono gathers together, in one place, all of the Beatles recordings that were mixed for a mono release. It will contain 10 of the albums with their original mono mixes, plus two further discs of mono masters covering similar ground to the stereo tracks on Past Masters . As an added bonus, the mono Help and Rubber Soul discs also include the original 1965 stereo mixes, which have not been previously released on CD.
The original Beatles catalogue has been digitally re-mastered for the first time for worldwide CD release. Each CD is packaged with replicated original UK album art, including expanded booklets containing original and newly written liner notes and rare photos. Each CD will also be embedded with a brief documentary film about the album.
The albums have been re-mastered by a dedicated team of engineers at EMI s Abbey Road Studios in London over a four year period utilizing state of the art recording technology alongside vintage studio equipment, carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analogue recordings. The result of this painstaking process is the highest fidelity the catalogue has seen since its original release.
Within each CD s new packaging, booklets include detailed historical notes along with informative recording notes. With the exception of the Past Masters set, newly produced mini-documentaries on the making of each album, directed by Bob Smeaton, are included as QuickTime files on each album. The documentaries contain archival footage, rare photographs and never-before-heard studio chat from The Beatles, offering a unique and very personal insight into the studio atmosphere.
For the new remasters, the engineer went back to the original 1960 s analog master tapes. Remastering is about working with, sharpening, amplifying, clarifying, and enhancing what are already the settled or established facts of the original mix. A listening session in early June at Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan confirmed that this is exactly what has been done. In A/B comparisons with the 1987 CD versions, the Beatles records sounded more alive, more spirited, with greater dynamic range, and a new spaciousness that was very apparent...
