Wish You Were Here 5.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part Two Wish You Were Here is the ninth studio album by Pink Floyd, released in September 1975.
The album explores themes of absence, the music business, and former band-mate Syd Barrett.
It was inspired by material the band composed while performing across Europe, and recorded over numerous sessions at London s Abbey Road Studios.
Early sessions were difficult and arduous but it was Roger Waters idea to split the centre piece track Shine On You Crazy Diamond in two, and join each half with three new compositions.
Shine On was a tribute to Barrett, who, coincidentally, made an impromptu visit to the studio while it was being recorded.
As with their previous work, The Dark Side of the Moon, the band made much use of studio effects and synthesisers.
Roy Harper was a guest vocalist on Have a Cigar , and the album s packaging, again designed by Storm Thorgerson, featured an opaque black sleeve which hid the album artwork.
Wish You Were Here was released in September 1975 to instant success record company EMI was unable to print enough copies to satisfy demand.
The album has been acclaimed by critics, and appears in Rolling Stone magazine s The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.
Band members Richard Wright and David Gilmour have each declared Wish You Were Here their favourite Pink Floyd album.
An amazing complete pressing of what is undoubtedly one of the iconic albums of the 20th century ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING: Yes brilliant - TOP AUDIO WISH YOU WERE HERE is a musical masterpiece and is also an incredibly sensitive piece of vinyl.
Even barely worn copies can have a lot of surface sound on musically complex and busy tracks like Have A Cigar.
I am a huge fan of WISH YOU WERE HERE and highly critical of the audio performance.
I just cant stand to hear a pressing that is worn or plays with anything other than great clear sound.
And it is so hard to find any original pressing with any like a clear audio performance.
I am pleased to say that this rare UK 1st pressing plays through with superb audio.
This great record plays up to the high visual grading and beyond.
Strong sound free of any loud pops or clicks, the audio is perfect, with barely any surface sound and certainly nothing repetitive or obtrusive.
The channels are clean and unstressed.
I will give a detailed account below: This great sounding pressing starts with surprisingly little static in that famous extremely long run in intro to Shine On You Crazy Diamond 1-5 , that is always plagued by crackle, hiss and static.
Here there is great clear sound and very little detectable static, it plays superbly with not a single loud click or pop.
Again, the long intro to Welcome to the Machine , another delicate track also sounds great and the whole of the first side really plays with superbly clear audio throughout.
There is barely any discernible static, and absolutely no pops or clicks.
Side 2.
also begins with great clear sound, and Have A Cigar kicks in with great audio.
There is barely any background static at the start or during the music, juts one very light pop in the middle.
I m happy to say that the same goes for the long intro to Shine On You Crazy Diamond 6-9 part 2.
So often heavily distorted and affected by clicks and hiss, it plays through with amazing clarity.
The stunning Wish You Were Here , such a difficult track to find with clear sound, plays superbly.
There is virtually no detectable light static, and no pops or clicks.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond plays perfectly, continuing the same high standard.
The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, and vocals, which come through with tremendous power and clarity.
As is the same with the keyboard layering and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear.
This vinyl plays with superb, clear bright rich audio.
It is as flawless as vinyl could ever be, and that is doubly amazing, conceding how prone Wish You Were Here is to surface sound.
I would give an overall audio grading at NEAR MINT.
THE RECORD - VISUAL GRADINGA great piece of glossy vinyl.
Side 1.
and 2.
are almost entirely unmarked.
NO hairlines and absolutely NO scratches.
A couple of the faintest handling marks only.
A great press of this extremely rare vinyl.
A lovely piece of HEAVY glossy vinyl.
Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings.
The record has great shine and minimal handling marks.
Graded at NEAR MINT.
THE LABELS These are a great pair of labels.
No spindle wear, and certainly no writing, finger prints or other obvious marks.
Not a single spindle trace.Graded at NEAR MINT.
VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING: Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.
THE COVER The Matt finish covers of WISH YOU WERE HERE are very prone to wear.
Being matt finish and WHITE, and not having the advantage of being laminated, these covers usually faired pretty badly, with serious ring wear and scuffed along the edges.
The Spines are nearly always flattened, worn and scuffed.
Not this one This original pressing comes with its original cover and has been protected from new in its original black Shrink Wrapping.
That means that the cover has never been exposed to the light of day, other than the outer edge which is also in great condition.
This cover is in near perfect condition, and that is virtually un heard of for WISH YOU WERE HERE.
The opening edges are very square and totally un frayed.
The Spine can be seen to be square and true beneath its protective black wrap.
The cover is not bowed, as these covers usually are, due to the compression caused by the shrink wrap.
All round, this is a really amazing example of a very delicate cover, it is hardly marked at all.
And, this is an ORIGINAL COVER.
Graded at NEAR MINT.
The album begins with an eight-minute, thirty seconds instrumental introduction, before segueing into the lyrics for Shine On You Crazy Diamond .
Shine On is a tribute to former band member Syd Barrett, whose drug-induced breakdown had forced him to leave the band several years before.
Barrett is fondly recalled with lines such as Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun and You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon .
The album is also a critique of the music business Shine On segues seamlessly into Welcome to the Machine , which begins with the opening of a door described by Waters as a symbol of musical discovery and progress betrayed by a music industry more interested in greed and success.
The song ends with sounds from a party, epitomising the lack of contact and real feelings between people .
After a long struggle for the band Waters began to visualise another concept.
The three new compositions from 1974 s tour were at least a starting point for a new album, and Shine On You Crazy Diamond seemed a reasonable choice as a centrepiece for the new work.
Mostly an instrumental twenty-minute-plus piece similar to Echoes , the opening four-note guitar phrase reminded Waters of the lingering ghost of former band-member Syd Barrett.
Gilmour had composed the phrase entirely by accident, but was encouraged by Waters positive response.
Waters was keen to split Shine On You Crazy Diamond , and sandwich two new songs between its two halves.
The recording of the album was interrupted by the now infamous return of Syd Barrett, showing up unexpectedly at the studio.
Although the lyrics had already been created, Barrett s presence influenced the final part of the song a subtle refrain performed by Wright from See Emily Play is audible toward the end of the album.
The band played much of Wish You Were Here on 5 July 1975 at an open-air music festival at Knebworth, after it had been playing Shine On You Crazy Diamond since the year before and Have a Cigar throughout its 1975 tour.
The album was released on 12 September 1975 in the UK, and on the following day in the US.
In Britain, with 250,000 advance sales it went straight to number one, and demand was such that EMI informed retailers that only 50 of their orders would be fulfilled.
With 900,000 advance orders the largest for any Columbia release it reached number one on the US Billboard chart in its second week.
As of 1991 Wish You Were Here was Pink Floyd s fastest-selling album ever.
The album was certified Silver and Gold 60,000 and 100,000 sales respectively in the UK on 1 August 1975, and Gold in the US on 17 September 1975.
It was certified six times platinum on 16 May 1997, and as of 2004 has sold an estimated 13 million copies worldwide.

Graded at NEAR MINT RARITY Wish You Were Here has been re produced in massive quantities, being one of the most iconic albums of the 20th century.
On saying that, finding an original UK early press in great condition is unbelievably rare indeed.
Its an extremely rare collectable, it is so hard to find an original pressing with great audio performance.
There are so many extremely long quiet passages, it is undoubtedly one of the hardest pieces of vinyl from the early 1970 s to find with great audio.
The cover is almost impossible to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce and this one is a brilliant example.
Finding a great cover like this, with a great piece of vinyl and rare inner sleeve, fantastic .
