Among the most popular artists and greatest songwriters of our time, Paul Simon returned with his first album in six years – and the album titled Surprise is exactly that. First, three songs were co-written with electronic music guru Brian Eno; second, the other songs are straightforward, wonderfully American pop. Surprise is a pleasant surprise for Simon fans. I received this album as a birthday gift - my first Paul Simon album since Graceland. That's obviously a span of many years (almost 20) and my musical tastes have since migrated to the more "modern" sounds of Arcade Fire, Ryan Adams, Zero 7, Audioslave, The Shins, etc. Perhaps an eclectic mix of artists, but all pioneers in the modern era of rock.
I popped in Suprise and was completely blown away. The master shines on this album of incredible stories intertwined within some of the best hooks I've heard in some time. Lyrically, this album is pure poetry.

This Simon and Garfunkel Classic Pressing has been critically acclaimed as the quietest and finest ever produced of this BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER recording. It is a new listening experience that will virtually feel as if you were in the studio with Simon and Garfunkel.
After a decade of pop stardom, America's favorite folk rock duo were just about ready to go their separate ways (at least Simon was) but not before releasing this gem as a swan song. Possibly Simon and Garfunkel's most diverse album, BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER firmly established them as creators of pop standards on the par with Irving Berlin or Johnny Mercer. The title tune alone, a beautiful unfolding gospel-twinged vow of emotional commitment places them in the pop Hall of Fame forever.
The story obviously doesn't stop there. Foreshadowing Simon's solo work, the jubilant love song "Celia" and the poignant yearning "El Condor Pasa" both turned to the traditions of other cultures for music inspiration. The highly metaphorical "The Boxer" is the only real throwback to Simon's more self-conscious early work. The transient production of "The Only Living Boy In New York" puts a pop sheen on an early example of Randy Newman's influence on Simon. What a way to say good-bye.

This 10-song disc is Paul Simon's first album in over five years and is his most heartfelt and introspective to date.
The album features the 2010 single "Getting Ready for Christmas Day". Instead of sleigh bells and choirs, ‘Getting ready for Christmas Day’ has “the ragged charm” of the Simon and Garfunkel hit ‘Cecelia.’ The single also samples Reverend J.M Gates 1941 pre-war speech.
Paul Simon has a long, distinguished musical career that began in the 1960s as half of Simon and Garfunkel. The iconic musician has won numerous Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.

The story of the making of Graceland and the controversy it created, is told in "Under African Skies," a full-length documentary from two-time Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger. The film debuted at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, kicking off the year-long celebration commemorating the 25th anniversary of Simon's musical and cultural achievement with Graceland.
The universal appeal of the music of Graceland proved more powerful and enduring than the political hotbed attending its creation. In 1986, the album sold 14 million copies worldwide, and received universal praise from critics around the globe.
Paul Simon, a 12-time Grammy Award-winner, and composer of then two Grammy-awarded albums of the year (Bridge Over Troubled Water, Still Crazy After All These Years) traveled to South Africa to record with local artists. Simon and the members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo subsequently performed on TV's Saturday Night Live and appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone.
By January of 1987, "You Can Call Me Al" was everywhere and Graceland won Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 1987. Then, in an unprecedented carryover, the album garnered the Grammy for Song of the Year with its title track in 1988. The album generated three hit singles and kept Paul Simon and the Graceland tour on the road for five years.
During his distinguished career Paul Simon has been the recipient of many honors and awards including 12 Grammy Awards, three of which ("Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Still Crazy After All These Years" and "Graceland") were albums of the year. In 2003 he was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work as half of the duo Simon and Garfunkel. He is a member of The Songwriters Hall of Fame, a recipient of their Johnny Mercer Award and is in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Simon and Garfunkel and as a solo artist. His song "Mrs. Robinson" from the motion picture "The Graduate" was named in the top ten of The American Film Institute's 100 Years 100 Songs.

The soundtrack to this Oscar and Golden Globe winning film was put together from already existent, successful pop numbers. No words are really necessary about the music, since numbers such as "Sound of Silence," "Mrs. Robinson" and "Scarborough Fair" have entered into the annals of musical culture ever since they were used in the film. It is astounding to note how seamlessly the various works fit snugly into the film's context, as though they had been specially written for the scenes. It catapulted Simon & Garfunkel right to the top of the list of ballad singers, and it also includes instrumental insertion numbers by Dave Grusin, who virtually fell into oblivion after all the hype about this provocative movie.

Though the American folk movement of the early '60s would influence bands like the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield and a score of oh-so-sensitive '70s singer-songwriters, its two most looming successes during the decade--Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel--couldn't have seemed more disparate. While Dylan turned hard-left, outraging many a folk purist by zealously embracing rootsy blues-rock and its electrified cacophony, S&G veered toward the center, equally infuriating snooty pundits by embracing a Top 40 pop sense whose ostensible shallowness often belied its rich musical diversity. In retrospect, Simon and Garfunkel's career as a duo was remarkably brief (five albums in six years), if no less commercially potent (a slew of Top 40 singles, two Number One albums, and the requisite handful of Grammy Awards). This box set compiles digitally remastered versions of the original S&G albums, each expanded to include bonus tracks (mostly previously unissued demos with a few scattered outtakes, the quartet on Sounds of Silence the best of the lot) and a booklet featuring new notes for each album and song lyrics. It's a rewarding journey, wending from the almost slavish folk devotion of Wednesday Morning 3 AM through the greeting-card iconoclasm of Sounds of Silence, the madrigal-pop of Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme to the increasingly impressionistic lyrical landscape of Bookends. It also covers the rich musical tapestry of Bridge over Troubled Waters, which foreshadowed Simon's own diverse solo career by embracing everything from the Everlys and Jan & Dean to Andean folk and R&B
