GUARANTEED To my ears, Creedence never really matched this majestic work, although they went on to record many other, more commercially successful albums: their first album, recorded in late 1967 and released in early 1968, is a masterpiece of tight group sound, which , at turns, can be rocking, fuzzy, psychedelic, rhythm-and-bluesy or simply bluesy.
Their heavy-psych version of I put a spell on you not only buried forever Screamin Jay Hawkins voodoo original, but also Van Morrison s pseudo-blues rendition or Nina Simone folksy, soulful version or , for that matter, any other version in existence.
Five minutes of perfection, from start to finish.
Almost 45 years after the album came out, that guitar solo still sends shivers down my spine.
And then, there is the monster 9-minute version of Suzie-Q , probably the only extended-jam song from the sixties that does not leave me terminally bored for a second.
