This is a genuine, original 1971 UK Mercury pressing of The Man who sold the world.
Textured sleeve with Bowie s boot well away from the edge Circled P not an R in front of the date on the labels No gap in the word BROADCASTING on the labels 1st press STAMPED matrix numbers: Matrix numbers - side 1 - 6338041 1Y//1 v420 1 14 side 2 - 6338041 2Y//1 v420 1 1 1 This 1971 album is one of the rarest David Bowie collectables.
When the album was released it was the sleeve that attracted most attention as it featured Bowie in a dress, to the extent that some collectors now refer to it as the transvestite cover .
While it sold in insufficient numbers to enter the charts in 1971 it did attract a good deal of airplay on radio, particularly on the John Peel Show.
When Bowie made his big breakthrough the following year, in 1972, his new record label, RCA Victor, re-issued his earlier Phillips and Mercury albums.
In the case of The Man Who Sold the World , the dress cover was ditched in favour of a new sleeve.
The re-issued RCA album made number 26 in the chart and the original Mercury album become a collectors item overnight.
