It was his first release through RCA, which would be his label for the next decade.
Hunky Dory has been described by All Music s Stephen Thomas Erlewine as having a kaleidoscopic array of pop styles, tied together only by Bowie s sense of vision: a sweeping, cinematic m lange of high and low art, ambiguous sexuality, kitsch, and class .
One of the rarest Bowie albums ever, the 1st press Laminated cover pressings of Hunky Dory are unbelievably hard t find in any condition, let alone as brilliant as this one.
The album was first released in November 1971, being Bowies first resale on the RCA label.
The album went largely unnoticed and sold very little.
In late 1972 as Bowie became an international superstar with the Ziggy Stardust persona, and Hunky Dory was shortly re released, making no 3.
in the U charts.
This later re issue was made with out the ULTRA RARE Laminated cover, that only came with the deleted very 1st pressings.
The album has received critical acclaim since its release, and is regarded as one of the artist s best works.
Time chose it as part of their 100 best albums of all time list in January 2010, with journalist Josh Tyrangiel praising Bowie s earthbound ambition to be a boho poet with prodigal style .
The style of the album cover was influenced by a Marlene Dietrich photo book that Bowie took with him to the photo shoot.
Bowie himself considers the album to be one of the most important in his career.
Speaking in 1999, he said: Hunky Dory gave me a fabulous groundswell.
I guess it provided me, for the first time in my life, with an actual audience I mean, people actually coming up to me and saying, Good album, good songs.
That hadn t happened to me before.
It was like, Ah, I m getting it, I m finding my feet.
I m starting to communicate what I want to do.
Now: what is it I want to do? There was always a double whammy there.
ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:It is unbelievably hard to find copies of HUNKY DORY with great audio.
So many vinyls, even visually clean examples can play with a lot of distortion and repetitive clicks.
For such a varied album that is not surprising, but the production and mastering also meant that these vinyls were prone to dust penetration and surface noise, and there are a lot of quiet areas that can just sound terrible on worn copies.
To give an example of how unusual this pressing is, there is a faint vocal echo on Bowie s voice on the quiet Changes track.
Not the echo on the primary vocal, but a very faint second vocal.
This can usually never be heard, it is so faint and the slightest vinyl wear will cover it up.
On this amazing press the vocal definition is crystal clear. This is a the ultimate VAULT AUDIO 1st press example, with incredible Strong, undistorted sound, and a minimum of any detectable static or surface sound.
Channels are clean and unstressed.
The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, and vocals which come through with tremendous power.
All the instruments and every breath of Bowie s singing is bright and clear.
As with the bass and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and precise.
I will give a detailed account below.
Even for David Bowie Hunky Dory is a complex and varied collection of music, and hard to find in clear audio condition.
Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like Oh You Pretty Things.
This pressing has unbelievable strong undistorted audio, with super clear strong sound.
NO interference, and NO loud pops or clicks or Distortion.
Any static is extremely low level, barely detectable, and that is unusual for any vinyl.
It really sounds great and plays with great sound separation and clarity The album starts with amazing power and clarity.
Changes is a complex track with complex audio layering, all crystal clear.
Some very light static and a couple of staid tics at the start, but nothing obvious.
The sound is brilliant and bright.
A wonderful Oh You Pretty Things sounds like it has ever been played a few times, its so clear.
It sounds like the vinyl looks as a matter of fact.
A single very light pop only.
Eight Line Poem plays beautifully, with that echo on Bowie s voice nearly always lost, sounds superb.
Its a very quiet track and plays with some very distant occasional background static only.
Superb audio.
The classic Life on Mars plays superbly with very little detectable static or surface sound at all.
Unbelievable.
Kooks also sounds great, with barely any detectable static or surface sound at all.
Rounding off side 1.
Quicksand sounds amazing, superb bright audio with no loud pops or clicks.
Fill Your Heart brings in side 2, again with crystal clear audio, as with Andy Warhol , which plays with great clear sound, and just a touch of very occasional distant surface static and a few very light barely audible tics at the very start.
And I mean you have to have your head with next to the speaker and be straining to hear any static at all.
Song for Bob Dylan and Queen Bitch play again with what can only be described as perfect audio, and I don t use that term lightly.
The Bewlay Brothers finishes off this great album with the same top standard.
Simply Perfect I really enjoyed every second of this rare 1st pressing.
There are NO repeat tics, NO distortion, NO sticks or jumps what so ever.
This pressing plays with crisp clear audio throughout, with no loss of audio performance what so ever.
Truly unbelievable audio experience.
I would easily give this a grading of EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT condition.
THE LABELSFamous 1st Press RCA labels are in SUPERB Condition, no marks or writing, no spindle wear.
A lovely set of labels with NO spindle traces or marks of any sort.
These are an immaculate pair of labels As close to perfect as labels can ever be.A really wonderful set Must grade at NEAR MINT to MINT VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:Yes, NONE visible what so ever, when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.
THE RECORD - Visual Grading A superb piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing.
Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings, this vinyl is as new.
On first inspection in strong daylight this vinyl looks completely unmarked and even when inspected under a powerful spot light, it still looks unmarked, with only the faintest of sleeve removal marks, but these are very light and almost imperceptible.
This vinyl is stunning and easily graded at NEAR MINT.
A great all round Complete and Rare example of this EARLY ROCK MASTERPIECE THE COVER The unlaminated pale covers of Aladdin Sane are almost impossible to find in great condition.
They are nearly always scuffed and creased to a large extent, if not heavily worn, with dark specs where the colour has been worn off across the flat surfaces.
I don t need to tell you how rare it is to have a pressing that is has a solid square spine and un worn edges.
This great complete 1st press comes with the original unlaminated cover, which is a stunning example.
The cover shows barely any handling wear, minimal creasing and corner wear, and has certainly no tears or obvious defects.
There is no feathering to the openings, which is very unusual.
The cover is square and un flattened and has been has not lost any of its shape.
I would have to grade this at EXCELLENT.
THE INNERGreat Original 1st Press inner sleeve in EXCELLENT PLUS condition.
A great example, with barely any light creases only, there are no tears to the top edges, and NO seem splits.
This is a great fully intact example with barely any wear at all.
THE LYRIC INSERTGreat Original 1st Press inner sleeve in EXCELLENT PLUS condition.
A great example, with barely any light creases, there are no tears to the top edges, and NO seem splits.
This is a great fully intact example with barely any wear at all.
RARITYHUNKY DORY is a highly collectable vinyl, reaching increasingly high prices.
And there are a number of good reasons.
It is a classic, ground breaking piece of music, and has a number of brilliantly designed components, all if which are prone to wear.
A thin laminated cover, which is nearly always heavily marked and scuffed, an inner that is usually torn and covered in finger prints, a thin lyric insert that is usually stained and torn, and a great vinyl that was nearly always played into submission.True 1st pressings with the unbelievably rare 1st press laminated cover virtually never come on the market, and are virtually unheard of in this stunning condition.THIS IS A NEAR PERFECT ALL ROUND 1ST PRESSING.
FINDING AN ORIGINAL UK STEREO PRESS IN STUNNING ALL ROUND CONDITION, a 1st PRESSINGS THAT IS EXTREMELY RARE.
THIS IS A GREAT PLAYING VINYL WITH SUPER BRIGHT CLEAR AUDIO, A SUPERB COVER AND INNER.
I DOUBT YOU WILL EVER HEAR A BETTER PLAYING PRESSING.
ALL MAKING THIS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO OWN AN EXTREMELY RARE PIECE OF MUSICAL HISTORY GREAT COVERS WITH NO SEAM SPLITS, NO TEARS, NO WRITING, NO STICKERS.GREAT VINYLS WITH NO LOUD CLICKS OR POPS, NO JUMPS OR REPEATS - GUARANTEED SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING PLEASE NOTE:This record has been play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description.

I aim to describe all items as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description..VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:The highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and is what I always aim for.
I only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance, super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference.
Even with the cleanest copies you will find occasional static sound or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves.
This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played, worn or soiled pieces of vinyl.
Any static build up will reduce when played, and I advise a light clean should be given between plays for optimal performance.
VINYLLarge format art work covers with the original sound and mix unique to vinyl and of the highest quality audio.
