DAVID BOWIE: Pin Ups LP.
UK VERY FIRST PRESSING, 19th OCTOBER, 1973.
An absolutely stunning unplayed first pressing from a collection that included a just sold first pressing of Hunky Dory , the covers were placed inside plastic outer sleeves from day one.
Unused, the rare first issue only, textured matt cover only has a touch of ageing and minor traits of standing in storage for 41 years.
The unique cover also has the spine ends tapered into a pointed shape, I last sold this earliest cover before we joined ebay and were trading at record fairs, approximately 15 years ago now.
TEXTURED ORANGE RCA LABEL: A timely reminder to always check the text on the labels for verification of UK pressings for Bowie s 1970 s albums, the orange RCA labels look almost identical in a multitude of other countries, for example, as far apart as Greece and Canada.
Also be aware the genuine UK 1970 s RCA labels have text on the bottom rims in white lettering, not black.
That section contains the country of origin, like all authentic UK pressings, these labels have Manufactured By RCA Limited, England From Master Recordings Of RCA Recordings.
PRESSED BY PYE, THE MAITRIX: RS 1003 - A - 3E / RS 1003 - B - 3E Hand scribed, definitely not machine stamped The above is the maitrix of early 1970 s UK first pressing RCA albums, but I was not surprised to find the Discogs website once again stating the wrong matrix ending A - IT/B - IT .
A starting point for end digits and letters were not always in numerical sequences, with so many copies being imported from France and Canada etc.
etc in 1973 and UK Dynaflex flexidisc thin pressings issued as well in late 1973, this should be not be complicated.
On the website someone had written in with this record s maitrix but they have not amended their error or acknowledged they had been contradicted.
Anyway, this only concerns the order of the first pressing though because both were made before the release date, the problem is ebay sellers who rely on websites then claim they have the one and only UK first pressing.
The important factor here is an extremely rare, unplayed, true mint 41 year old Made In England very first pressing on Pye s top quality vinyl.
Incidentally, Pye also contractually pressed all the A M label records between 1969 and the very period I am detailing, they all had a hand scribed maitrix.
Although so many orange RCA first pressings were machine stamped, I will categorically state that all the first pressings Pin Ups had hand written indexing and the next section simply had to have variations due to the manufacturing process for so many records.
ALSO IN THE RUN-OUT GROOVES OF THIS RECORD AND OTHER VERY FIRST PRESSINGS: A1X W I cannot tell if the middle 1 is the letter l and guessed it was a digit and not a letter.
The letter W was scibed as I typed it and I think it was the logo of the sound engineer and not indexing, when not 100 certain I say so, with a personal opinion or two of course ORIGINAL 1973 RCA INNER SLEEVE, TYPICAL OF THIS ERA, ALL THE CORNERS ARE SQUARE NOT CURVED, WITH A A DIE-CUT CENTRE TO READ THE LABEL FROM.
THE FRONT BOTTOM HAS RCA TEXT AND COPYRIGHT S.
UNUSED UNSPLIT, JUST A GENTLE RECORD IMPRESSION AND A FEW ASSOCIATED LIGHT CREASES, BUT BARELY ANY AGEING, IN NEAR MINT CONDITION.
FIRST ISSUE, DOUBLE SIDED INSERT IN BLACK AND WHITE, FEATURING THE SAME PICTURE OF DAVID AND SAX ON BOTH SIDES.
THE TEXT DIFFERS PER SIDE, DAVID BOWIE S PERSONALLY WRITTEN FULL ALBUM CREDITS AND THE OTHER SIDE HAS THE FULL LYRICS TO RAY DAVIES Where Have All the Good Times Gone.
I did see an ebay expert state the first UK inserts were glossy, oh yes, well that was yet another invention, like all the 70 s UK Bowie album inserts, they are slightly textured matt paper of the thin variety, just like in Hunky Dory .
Glossy inserts will belong to non UK printied items, liberally swopped around due to how easily they tore and creased.
Plus developed ageing spots due to the texture of the matt paper.
This has none of those problem , with only a light impression from the record in the inner sleeve.
THE INSERT IS IN MINT- CONDITION TEXTURED TOP SURFACE CARDBOARD FIRST ISSUE TEXTURED COVER, THE PRINTER WAS UNCREDITED BUT I AM CERTAIN IT WAS MADE BY Howards Printers, England.
THIS PRE-DATED RCA S PRICE CODE AND BY 1973, Mainman WAS ESTABLISHED ON THE COVER AND INSERT.
I have fully described the condition and unique features, to sum up, absolutely minimal natural ageing because unlike immediately following covers in 1973, the cover does not have a smooth, sheen finish.
There is no wear or damage to describe, a record impression and a few related tiny paper edge lines, the spine is still white and all the lettering is present and clear.
Being textured, the printing was not easily absorbed and as my close up pictures of all the printing on the spine shows, any light brushing....is light The printing was placed on the tapering shaped ends and I have shown both the top and bottom of the spine in a compiled picture, the shape of the spine can clearly be seen as well.
That shape had to involve ridged edges where the front and back s edges met the spine, typical of the shape there are a few minor ripples in the spine.
The corners, edges and opening sides are near perfect and after 41 years, I doubt very much if this uniquely designed, textured cover could possible be in any finer condition.
I am not claiming a Mint cover, but unused has preserved it superbly, please see my pictures for how ultra bright the artwork colours are and unfaded.
THE COVER IS IN SUPERB, EXCELLENT / NEAR MINT CONDITION.
THE IMMACULATE TEXTURED LABELS DO NOT HAVE A SINGLE SPINDLE ALIGNMENT TRACE, THE VINYL IS ALSO LIKE BRAND NEW, THE RECORDS IS IN UNPLAYED / MINT CONDITION.

MacCormack - backing vocals Trevor Bolder - bass Aynsley Dunbar - drums Produced By David Bowie Ken Scott Today I had an unplayed Pin Ups and an unplayed 1967 mono single to list and describe, as the single was from Bowie s chosen years of 1964 - 1967, I thought the best order would be to play the Move s sensational debut single, Night Of Fear and write a short description during a one play through.
That se me up perfectly to begin David s Bowie s whole album dedicated to versions of his personal singles from those magical years, he might well be Ziggy Stardust in appearance but his love and inspiration of 60 s singles, was the same for my generation and all that followed.
The above tracks perfectly represent the sensational music that has never dated or become unconnected to the music in 2014, a wonderful selection that derived from the initial r b of the Mod era and then into the dazzling psychedelia that still shines like a beacon, including Syd Barret s See Emily Play was a stroke of genius and also Bowie s musical roots.
Maybe his own records in the 1960 s sold only a few copies until 1969, but he was just waiting until the world caught up with him, a master songwriter had quite choice to make and what an album Pin Ups was I never know how to write Pin Ups because the original 1973 labels spell it with a hyphen as Pin-Ups , but as the cover and the insert have Pin Ups , I go with the majority of printed items.
Personally I believe at least two printers were involved in the printing of the first issues, so many variations exist for the labels and covers, I forgot to add to the pointed spine ends and textured front of first issues only that some of the earliest covers did not include the catalogue number for cassettes on the back bottom centre.
1973 was a time of strikes, blackout s, power cuts, petrol rationing and the British government going to war with Trade Unions, by putting soldiers on the streets and a very aggressive, violent police force.
Then there was that oil crisis that saw Pin Ups issued on Dynaflex which was no thicker than flexi discs, so few have survived today I really need to concentrate on the later budget label re-issues being sold now on ebay as first pressings.
So any printing variations from the factories working only a three day week, must be viewed as part of toughest year since the aftermath of Second War in Britain, slowly and painfully recovering from the Blitz in the 1950 s decade.
The 1960 s was the renaissance of music, fashion and art, the reason David Bowie had 60 s British fashion model icon, Twiggy on the front cover with.....
Ziggy I just wrote that without any form of earlier thought s, I should end this description on that because I cannot come up with anything to beat it.
Oh, well, the no end of re-issues of Bowie s 60 s masterpiece of an album of cover versions, bridged the Ziggy Stardust era and the next phase of Diamond Dogs, can be found on the green and black RCA labels.
The budget versions appeared on the International RCA label and have none of the features of the early to later 1970 s orange RCA labels, let alone the genuine very first made.
I have covered the mistakes on internet sites and sad to say, that will continue for the majority of albums because the writer s were not even born in the era they appoint themselves as experts on.
Then the same age ebay sellers copy paste the errors and believe they have the gospel to preach, well, websites and text books are wrong and I can only tell it as it was and not how it suits a small minority who base their facts on seeing a few copies from records made in near millions.
1973 was so close to the 1960 s decade it was touching it I really think it will become futile to continue challenging and contradicting the power of the written word on the internet like that, but...
every record I sell will be accompanied by my genuine personal experience of buying records as they were recorded and watching the then current tours, I will never go with the flow just for an easy ride.
