1970 TOP RATED SOUGHT AFTER COLLECTIBLE SOLID COLLECTION COPY DAVID BOWIE MAN OF WORDS, MAN OF MUSIC USA - MERCURY RECORDS - SR 61246 ...RARE...
- NICE COLLECTION COPY - ...BEST COPY WE VE COME ACROSS FOR AWHILE ...
HOPEFULLY....NO ONE LIKELY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS BEAUTY SOUGHT AFTER 1970 first pressing unipack cover with lyrics on the inside...
most spare copies have been virtually dried up for years having been long ago snatched up by collectors ...
...more art-folk and hippie-ish than BOWIE S celebrated work.
Strummed 12-string acoustic guitars and minor chords dominate.
MAN OF WORDS, MAN OF MUSIC was the first record on which David Bowie looked and sounded like the Bowie whom the world has come to know.
One glance at the spooky, androgynous face that adorns the record was enough to signal that the Anthony Newley-influenced, light-pop singer who sang the novelty number The Laughing Gnome a few years earlier was a thing of the past.
Leaving behind the mannered, English music hall-isms of his initial recordings, Bowie roughened up the sound, creating a ragged, eclectic mix of folk and rock tinged with electronic sounds.
The record yielded his first American hit, and began the singer s soon-to-be meteoric rise to international rock icon-hood.
SPACE ODDITY, a sci-fi mini-epic, is an enduring classic in which Bowie squeezes every bit of drama from both his dour low range and the soaring upper reaches of his voice.
Even after decades of continued airplay, Space Oddity is surprising for its intricate arrangement, nifty guitar playing, and palpable sense of interplanetary estrangement.
Other fine and lesser-known musical moments include the sublimely subdued Letter to Hermione, and the sprawling and strange Memory of a Free Festival.
It has everything from pure popsike ballad to psychedelic rock and progressive folk and still it s a solid entirety.
A beautiful one.
There are various 12 string guitar based songs on the album and Letter To Hermione, one of his most beautiful, falls squarely into the singer-songwriter genre.
Janine does too but there are other songs simply too idiosyncratic to appeal to the same group of listeners.
Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud and An Occaisional Dream are both impressive arrangements but too melodramatic and not introspective enough for the easy listening, middle-of-the-road west Coast tastes of the time.
Unwashed And Somewhat Slightly Dazed turns into an enjoyable loose jam and with it s obscure lyrics and rather disarranged presentation might be one of Bowie s first tributes to the Velvet Underground.
Something sinister lurks within the inpenetrable Cygnet Committee which has some delightful twists and turns but gets a bit hard to take at the great crescendo climax.
Such darkness sits uneasily alongside the flower-power sentiments of Memory Of A Free Festival, on which Bowie conjures up his version of Hey Jude and, as with that Beatles classic, the song at the beginning is rather diluted by the very extended coda.
The song writing is strong throughout this album, as you would expect from Bowie, irrespective of the style he adopts.
God Knows I m Good might be the slightest of the bunch but it still has an irresistable charm.
Space Oddity, a pun on the film title, was a big hit of course, and deservedly so with it s spacious atmospherics and soaring melody.
This is a fascinating and curious album...
