Item Description

DAVID BOWIE - THE PRETTIEST STAR B/WCONVERSATION PIECE 1970 U.K.
MERCURY RECORDS DEMO - NOT FOR SALE - VINYL 45 - CATALOGUE NO: MF1135 6052 011 VERY, VERY RARE DISC - A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY This DEMONSTRATION disc, like many others of that period was sent to AVENUE RECORDINGS in Chingford, London by a Third Party who hoped that if this particular disc made a chart entry, it would be faithfully reproduced as a Cover Version and issued on the now legendary AVENUE label.
I remember being handed this very disc after it was played at Avenue s office by the resident Musical Director ALAN CADDY who flippantly said I can t see that charting, but if it does, David that s David Byron of URIAH HEEP fame could cover the vocals without any problems .
Sadly, as this disc failed to enter the U.K.
charts it was never covered for release on AVENUE.
This stunning example is, what I believe to be one of only three singles ever to be released by DAVID BOWIE on the MERCURY Record label.
Both A and B sides were written by David Bowie and were arranged and produced by Tony Visconti.
The stamped Matrix numbers read - A Side - 6052011 1F // 1 1.
2B Side - 6052011 2F // 1 1.
1 As with most Demo records received, its usual plain white sleeve was replaced by a coloured AVENUE branded sleeve.
The disc comes in the pictured yellow AVENUE sleeve with no tears or seam splits or Distributor s name - please see photos.
This extremely fine edition has been stored for more than 48 years in my personal vinyl library.
It has only been played once to my knowledge when it was received at Avenue s London office in early 1970 The actual vinyl is in EXCELLENT - condition, please see photos.
Also please see photo of sleeve front and back to evaluate its condition.
The lucky winner of this auction will have an excellent edition of a 48 year old disc that is undoubtedly an icon of British Music History.
HAPPY BIDDING Any questions, please contact me via eBay On 02-Aug-18 at 14:14:34 BST, seller added the following information: STOP PRESS SALUTE TO DAVID BOWIE Cat.
No: AR756 - NOT included in this auction for information only Although the legendary Music Arranger ALAN CADDY was never requested by AVENUE RECORDS to cover this early BOWIE single using the voice of DAVID BYRON, a tribute album on the ARTISTRY RECORDINGS label was compiled and issued in 1979 bringing together 10 superb renditions of DAVID BOWIE chart hits featuring top session singers of the day with accompaniment directed by ALAN CADDY and RICHARD FRANKLIN.
This cassette only edition as photographed is also a rarity and much sought after by ardent BOWIE collectors.
