It s a
resolute Van Morrison, aware of his vocal potential, trustful of his
songwriting ability and sure he could exert his influence and control an
extended ensemble of musicians and their palette of timbres including,
guitars, mandolin, bass, drums, vibes, percussions, acoustic and
electric pianos, organ, winds, flutes, steel guitar and several
background vocalists , who with the help of producer Ted Templeman
leading the operations, with a perfect balanced album.
Bookended
by the bouncing, hot sensual Wild Nights and alternating
between a squared Tex-Mex vibe and a tranquil Soul-waltz before it
finally and fierily speeds-up to a climaxing ending on Moonshine
Whiskey , the album travels through multiple ambiances and moods, where
Morrison shows that it doesn t suffice to have an enlarged backing-band,
but that it s vital to know how to use the colors available that s
namely evidenced in the relaxed mid-part of the album, with guitarist
Ronnie Montrose doing the inspired initial brushstrokes for the painting
of You re My Woman landscapes, or drummer Connie Kay eruptions of
energy on the ballad-tempo of the title track, while Morrison improvises
in a jazz-jam spirit with the same ease he puts in evoking feelings, in
his ability to play with silences and in building real roller-coasters
of emotional levels, such as Old Old Woodstock .
Rural
inflected waltzes with Surf vibe Like A Cannonball , strummed Folk
inspired pieces where Morrison exercises his harmonica talents
Starting a New Life or lively Boogie-Woogie grooves with rolling
pianos and tasty electric slide guitar work When the Evening Sun Goes
Down are other options amidst the varied range of moods, a mature Van
Morrison conveys passionately.
