QUARTETO 1111- Debut LP 1970
Impossible to find original Portuguese psychedelic monster LP.
In my humble opinion this is one of the top 10 psychedelic LP s worldwide
Comes in front laminated flipback sleeve.
Columbia E 062-4037
Matrix: 40037 A-1G / 40037 B-1G
Condition: Front laminated flipback sleeve is in excellent condition, still retaining a solid gloss shine on the lamination. Spine is firm, intact, back cover has a tiny bit of yellowing on the white surface impossible to find immaculate copies after 45 years and a tiny, very tiny corner bend on the lower right side. Really solid EX condition for the cover.
Vinyl is very clean: A few inaudible scuffs from the vinyl itself, no scracthes, no marks at all. Plays excellent with good dynamics. Here and there a few light noises, no loud clicks, really a top condition Overall this grades EX for both cover and vinyl.
Background story about this record:
This is the original release of the legendary first LP by Portuguese psychedelic group Quarteto 1111, featured in Hans Pokora Record Collector Dreams . Released in March 1970, it started a revolution in the Portuguese rock world, as the music and lyrics herein were more original and creative than anything ever released up to that day.
The Portuguese political censorship commission of that period withdrew the record from the shops in a question of days after its release, and only one of the songs was permitted to be airplayed. This album was in fact a bi-conceptual project thus the first conceptual rock album in Portugal .
What you get here is a pure gem of dreamy psychedelic rock, fuelled by Jos Cid s organ and harpsichord playing and also by some of his best songs. Pr logo and Ep logo are the opening and closing tracks of the album, setting the mood by way of spoken word and musical accompaniment. In between, there is the heavy funk number A Fuga dos Grilos , the psych freak-out of Escravatura with vocal phasers , Pigmenta o , Uma Estrada Para a Minha Aldeia and the folk ballads Jo o Nada or Domingo em Bidonville . There is also a curiosity in the form of As Trovas do Vento Que Passa , with lyrics by poet Manuel Alegre, previously recorded by Adriano Correia de Oliveira in a Coimbra fado form and heralded as one of the anthems of Portuguese opposition to the dictatorship that ruled Portugal at that time. The lyrics of one of the last songs, Lenda de Nambuangongo , while musically purveying a kind of African psych rock, prevented Jos Cid from travelling to Angola, as its lyric portrayed the then Portuguese colony in a very realistic and violent way.
Apart from Quarteto 1111 members Jos Cid vocals, organ, harpsichord, piano, flute , Ant nio Moniz Pereira vocals, electric guitar, acoustic Guitar, bass guitar and 12-string guitar , M rio Rui Terra bass guitar and vocals and Miguel Artur da Silveira drums and percussion there is also a stellar cast of guest musicians. Among them, there are the violin player Carlos Z ngaro nowadays an improviser of international fame , the late cellist Celso de Carvalho both of them would later play on folk-prog legends Banda do Casaco, but at that time they were members of top psychedelic group Plexus and bass player Edmundo Silva, from the group Sheiks.

This particular copy came from a house in close vicinity to where the band rehearsed near Estoril and in my opinion, being in this excellent condition, it either belonged to one of the band members or was offered to a neighbour who just kept it stored away all these years, as this record has obviously seen very little play This is one of these records destined to become rarer and rarer with time, a definite must have for serious psych collectors
