This IS the very first pressing...an ex-girlfriend of the band had scrawled big fuckin deal in the original cover artwork. Capitol Records had to hand scratch out the offensive word from each cover see photo number 2, they ve scratched the word out. first print 69...
Original 1969 first pressing 2xLP vinyl of the very first album by The Sons Of Champlin, the San Francisco ballroom band who played along side all the psychedelic legends....
The first SONS OF CHAMPLIN was a double album set and sold well peaking at 137. That sales performance was even more impressive given problems with the cover art. Much to Capitol s dismay, the band insisted on furnishing their own cover art. In this case it was a collage that various friends had put together. Embedded in the artwork an unhappy ex-girlfriend had scrawled Big f ckin deal that somehow escaped notice until after the album had been released. Capitol recalled copies of the album and had employees scratch the offending word out. The obscinity is a chore to find buried among the tweaker art, but look hard enough there it is, lightly scratched across by Capitol...
One of the last and more obscure bands to emerge from the late- 60s San Francisco psychedelic scene, the Sons of Champlin were relatively unusual among Bay Area bands for favoring heavily R B-psych influenced material. Their more introspective songs can recall the more subdued efforts of Quicksilver Messenger Service and Moby Grape, and their longer compositions boasted unusually complex song structures and tempo shifts.
Revered by some collectors, the sound is gritty R B-based material and the ambitious longer tracks filled with plenty of jamming. Loosen Up Naturally has two powerful elements going for it -- an unequaled vibe of this music makes me feel good - And the Bill Champlin lyrics are deeper, stronger, more understandable and more meaningful than most of the 60 s San Francisco scene artists. He knew his heart and poured his feelings into his lyrics. His now famous voice is nothing short of spectacular.
When the double album first appeared, the local FM underground radio stations started playing the 14 minute plus Freedom . The entire album turned out to be amazing and its a sound you won t find anywhere else. There s a life-affirming beauty in these songs that grow well by each spin of the record, a great power is in this first album and the pure spirit of the 60 s hippies
