BOXIGANGA - Self Titled
Label: Custom
Description:
Arguably the rarest Australian acid folk LP. The only LP by the mysterious band Boxiganga . A totally obscure and still largely unknown recording from Melbourne in 1974. Recorded in Brunswick, the LP is the result of a once off jam session by a group of Hippie/Outsider folk musicians who disbanded soon after the recording. The tracks have a loose drifting DIY quality consisting of male and female vocals, guitars, bass, flute, sax, drums and percussion. I can t help but compare the sound to that of the Krautrock / European commune bands of the 70s. There s even a post-punk element to the music reminiscent of the Melbourne Little Band Scene of the late 70s/80s. Besides the fascinating music it is notable as it features Company Caine and Daddy Cool member Jeremy Noone AKA Jerry Kellock, who s sax playing adds avant-jazz touches to the raw yet psychedelic folk music.
An incredible document from the Melbourne underground/Carlton scene of the 1970s. A beautifully artefact with custom labels and a homemade screen printed sleeve which I have confirmed was pressed in a run of 100 copies. I am aware of only a handful of copies of this LP with most major record dealers in Melbourne I have spoken to unaware of it s existence. I m sure that there s more out there but as far as I know this is first time that this LP has appeared on eBay. I doubt you will see another any time soon.
