Item Description

VINTAGE AND INCREDIBLY RARE 1968 SOUTH AFRICAN GENE ROCKWELL 45 ISSUED ON THE BEATLES OWN APPLE LABEL ONE OF THE RAREST APPLE 45s IN THE WORLD, IF NOT THE RAREST IT IS SUNG IN THE AFRIKAANS LANGUAGE ONE OF, IF NOT THE RAREST APPLE LABEL RECORD IN THE WORLD THIS IS THE GENE ROCKWELL Die Jare Gaan Verby Those Were The Days sung in Afrikaans /Rose Is Rooi 7 45 / Apple Records PD.9431 Afrikaans language version of the Apple Records hit from MARY HOPKIN...
...
Afrikaans is a language derived from West German Dutch and is still spoken by 17-20 million South Africans....this version Die Jare Gaan Verby literally translated means The Years Pass in actual Dutch: De Jaren Gaan Voorbij , while Rose Is Rooi Rozen Zijn Rood means Roses Are Red ....and it s sung by a top South African pop singer of the day and released in a ridiculously small run via a brief licensing deal with a small independent distributor Gallo in South Africa....NEVER on CD anywhere, anyhow...
Apart from the Apple 1 Frank Sinatra single given to the 4 Beatles, this is the rarest Apple 45 ever it s THAT rare...it doesn t appear in any discographies at all...only in the essential Jeffrey Levy book AppleLog Apple Records cat no...PD.9431.
Handwritten matrix no s PD 9431 / ABC 27896 and PD 9431 / ABC 27897 last digit on Side B matrix number was originally incorrectly as a 6 , but the 6 was overwritten by a 7 .
Here s some words from other people re this single....
GENE ROCKWELL 7 Apple 45 - DIE JARE GAAN VERBY / ROSE IS ROOI .
An interesting thing about this and other S African Apple labels of this era is that they don t appear to have been issued by EMI South Africa , but instead by Gallo which issued Decca / London PD was a Gallo prefix.
The Single 45 Play circle on the left hand side was common to all the company s labels at the time Beatles records however, continued to be appear on EMI Parlophone.
In Tony Bramwell s book Magical Mystery Tour , he states that a special deal was made with a company in South Africa Gallo that released their OWN Apple label record that really didn t have anything to do with Apple Records in the UK/USA.

This super rarity was pressed and issued in South Africa on the APPLE label in 1968 Catalogue no PD.9431 .
The two songs featuring on this 7 single record, sung in Afrikaans by Gene Rockwell South African rock singer , were for some unknown reason issued on the APPLE label by the Brigadiers music company Gallo in South Africa only.
It seems that the first pressings were done on the Apple label with only a few making it to the record stores for whatever reason.
The record is much sought after by serious collectors of extremely rare records.
Record s condition - : VG- ...plays thru without any skips, but with background crackles some clicks here there....see pics.
Label is NM- on the A side and the B side has some pink stain and writing.
