Item Description
The Beatles : Sgt.
Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band 1/1 R1 / G1 This has to be one of the rarest and most collectable first mono pressings of Sgt.
Pepper s out there.
It has the rare R1 stamper on S1 and the super rare G1 stamper on S2 The G1 stamper is the holy grail for any collector Based on the GRAMOPHLTD system where G 1, R 2 etc any record made with a G stamper letter indicates the record was made from the very first stamper.
Later pressings may have a combination of two or three letters so RMH would have been made from the 247th stamper.
So when you consider anything between 300 - 500 records would be made with each stamper you can see just how rare this Sgt.
Pepper s is I am not even sure if a G1/G1 first press was ever made so this R1/G1 could be the first ever vinyl off the production line Yes it could be the 500th but you get what I mean Either way it is a fantastically rare album and as I say the G1 stamper is the most collectable stamper out there and especially for Beatles collectors. Not only that but the audio as detailed below plays to a superb standard overall and much of it plays with Mint quality It also comes complete with the original style gatefold with the wide spine.
These were only produced in relatively small numbers for the first pressings and the ones with the thin spines are a lot more common.
It also includes a perfect cut out card and the red inner sleeve is extremely clean with only one small split.First Mono 1/1 pressing with R1/G1 stampers on Yellow/Black label.

Ltd etc printed around the perimeter edge and Sold in U.K.

KT tax code stamp on S2 label.PMC 7027 // XEX 637 - 1 / XEX 638 - 1 // R 1 / G 1The audio on S1 is Near Mint Mint for the majority / track 6 is Ex The audio on S2 is Near Mint Mint in many sections / track 6 is Ex / intro is Ex- The gatefold is VG The red inner sleeve is Ex- The Cut Out card is Mint The labels are Mint- Visual grading Overall this is a very clean vinyl when you consider its rarity but is one of those records that plays a lot better than it looks.
However, I must be clear here, it is still in excellent condition and the vast majority of it is very clean indeed.
There are a number of faint sleeve removal hairlines on both sides but there are no scratches.
There are 3/4 longish hairlines that are more obvious on both sides plus one radial line on S1 and a very small needle drop type mark on S2 but other than the latter they have no affect on the audio at all.
As detailed below the audio plays to a superb standard for the vast majority and it just goes to show how robustly vinyl was made in the late 60s.
Both side of the record still retain an excellent glossy sheen and there is no groove wear either.
In fact judging by the spindle wear this record has not been played too much at all.
So not quite visually perfect but it is certainly a lot cleaner than many I have seen and for such a collectable and rare pressing it is in excellent condition.Play grading Sgt.
Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band has only minimal static on the audience intro and then plays with superb sound quality and no clicks, pops or crackle.
It really is a stunning version and there is no distortion on the top end.
In essence it plays as new and provides a sensational start to this mega rare G1 pressing A Little Help From My Friends impresses with Mint audio from start to finish.
The clarity could not be any better and there is just no background of any kind.
Wow So often the intro on Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds has a little distortion but there is very little here.
It then plays with a warmth and depth that is so rarely heard on such an early mono pressing.
The clarity is again stunning and once more there is no distortion and no other background for that matter.
The fade out also plays with perfect precision.
Getting Better again plays to a great standard but with just a minimal hint of static distortion every now and then.
This is very much in the background and certainly isn t intrusive and as I say it is mega minimal There are no clicks or pops again and this still grades as Near Mint in my opinion.
Fixing A Hole goes one better and plays as Mint the clarity and depth of the music and vocals is just spectacular and the fade out is absolutely perfect.
As I stated on the other listing She s Leaving Home always plays with some background on the first mono pressings.
This can t just be due to a mono record being played through a stereo system, it must be how it was recorded and produced also.
With that in mind and accepting some background as a given it has to be said there is definitely less static on the top end here than on many other versions I have heard.
Yes it can be heard but it is minimal and not high in the mix at all.
In fact I am very impressed by how clean it sounds when you consider this is an R1/G1 pressing It still plays very clearly and again...no clicks or pops.
Being For The Benefit of Mr Kite ends the side in stunning style and this is without doubt one of the most impressive versions I have heard for a long time.
There is so little static on the top end and the clarity is stunning.
This just gives further proof that this is a record that has only been lightly played and extremely well looked after.
So many sections play as Mint and the Wurlitzer organ quite simply sounds fantastic A fabulous end to the side.
Within You Without You has only a couple of very quiet static sounds on the intro and plays with wonderful clarity throughout.
I am actually blown away by the depth of the sound here, it can hardly have been played.
The separation is high end i.e.
you can hear each note so clearly and it basically plays as new .
An absolutely breathtaking start to S2.
When I m Sixty-Four continues in the same style and apart from a couple of mega light dust ticks this is Mint audio of the highest quality.
Ok the vinyl may not be visually perfect but oh boy it is playing with fantastic audio Lovely Rita is exceptional This track regularly plays with distortion but that is not the case here.
The audio could not be any clearer and I just cannot believe this record is over 50 years old From beginning to end it plays as good as when it was first released back in 67 The intro on Good Morning, Good Morning is nigh on perfect with barely any distortion and it continues to play with sublime depth and clarity.
Even the brief guitar solo in the middle plays with no distortion I really am running out of superlatives for the audio on this first ever first pressing and even the animals at the end play with stunning clarity I playtest every second of the LPs I sell, I don t just play excerpts as at the end of the day customers are parting with their hard earned cash.
What can I possibly say about the Sgt.
Pepper s reprise that sounds original? It has to be the most powerful and clean version I have heard in many a year.
The classic intro is just superb The power is incredible and the rhythm section sounds so good.
This track grades as Mint without question.
The acoustic intro on the classic A Day In The Life has three quiet dull click type sounds but then plays with great clarity and definition.
There is perhaps just a modicum of mega light static on the top end but it doesn t intrude on the quality of the listen.
The first crescendo section is superb, it builds so powerfully and there is no obvious distortion at all.
The bass then plays so strongly and the music is so clean again.
The audio plays with such dynamic power here and whilst there is minimal amount of distortion on the top end again I honestly do not think it is intrusive.
This final track always has a little background and it is extremely minimal here and it is quite simply a fantastic listen The final crescendo sections is mind-blowing and plays loud and true and with almost no distortion.
A little static on the final piano note but the long fade out then plays with near perfect precision. In summary this mega rare genuine first pressing from the first stampers plays with astounding quality on both sides.
The only obvious interference is the three quiet clicks on S2 but aside from that you could not wish for more impressive audio.
Yes there is some light distortion here and there but that is only to be expected and could perhaps be decreased when played on a mono set up.
Don t get me wrong it is only minor and does not interfere with the quality of the music It is very minor indeed So much of this stunning record plays as Mint and there cannot be many R1/G1 pressings that play as well as this The wide spine gatefold is also in excellent shape with only a little wear, the cut out is perfect and the red fool inner sleeve is very clean with only the one split. The GatefoldAs stated this G L gatefold is of the rare wide spine variety and aside from a little shelf wear is in excellent condition.
The top edge of the front cover is in superb shape with only a couple of tiny rubs and the bottom edge has just two small areas of wear.
The edges on the back cover are similarly very clean but they each have a small area of rubbing in the centre where the record has worn through.
However, they are very clean splits nd not immediately obvious at all.
The wide spine remains 100 legible but does have some wear on the corners.
The right hand corners are much cleaner and have very little wear.
The laminated front cover is in fantastic condition with no splits just a couple of tiny creases near the opening edge and a further one top left.
The back cover is also in lovely condition with only a small amount of laminate wear/splitting top right.
The first opening edge has only very minor handling wear and the second none at all.
The colours on the inside of the gatefold are still so strong and vibrant and there is only a minor amount of rubbing of the actual flipbacks.
There are no marks anywhere to be seen.
In actual fact the gatefold does not fully open suggesting that it has not been opened that much in the last 50 years.
So whilst there is some shelf wear I still believe it grades as a very strong VG and many aspects of it still remain in excellent order.Red inner sleeve Cut Out cardThe red fool inner sleeve is in excellent condition compared to so many.
There is only one small split on the bottom edge and some creasing and ringwear. The Cut Out card is in perfect condition with no signs of wear wear at all.The LabelsThe yellow/black Parlophone labels are in near perfect condition with a small amount of spindle wear on each side.
There are no marks or writing at all.
The KT tax code is on the S2 label.Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / B W 684 Speakers This record has been professionally cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine PMC 7027 // XEX 637 - 1 / XEX 638 - 1 // R 1 / G 1 I grade according to Record Collector guidelines.
