Announcement, applause and then controlled, catalyzing pandemonium. So begins the hens-teeth rare B bi, a private press affair hatched under the aegis of drum doyen Milford Graves in the spring of 1976. Tom toms roll and roil like thunderclaps from his Africanized kit. Reedists Arthur Doyle and Hugh Glover summon an almost unrelenting barrage of caustic strafing and scorched-ears excess. All of them drop into sudden, if fleeting silence just shy of four-minutes elapsed to the eruption of more applause. Unfettered glossolalia from Graves follows signaling another surging, unified volley into the maelstrom first with Doyle and then Glover again added. There s a pregnant pause wherein the horns appear to have reached momentary loggerheads, but it s quickly swept away in another propulsive torrent. Glover wrests the lead with Doyle hoisting what sounds like twittering piccolo and Graves remains unfailing in maintenance of an undulating tidal pulse. A final verbalized yawp signals an abrupt embrace of quiet leaving the audience briefly unsure as to the commencement of renewed applause.
Bi is a reset, catapulting again on a vocalized shout and pounding polyrhythms. Doyle and Glover joust again with the acoustics of the source recording working as a third antagonist favoring one or the other with a tension-ramping randomness. Two halves whole-d, B bi trades the density and intensity of its opposite album side siblings for a more measured attack punctuated by spoken word and number recitations from the leader. The aggressive percussion salvos between are brimming with textures and velocities by themselves, but the entrance of the horns several minutes in gives the proceedings another plunge into the gaping maw of dissonance moment that s both sobering and innervating at once. Doyle and Glover resolutely eschew any emissions resembling conventional notes from their mouthpieces, trafficking instead in pure, primal-rooted sound that channels the howling of primordial fauna and conflagrations of the natural realm with Graves eventually sheathing sticks and leaving them joust and grapple against the occasional whistle, gong or shaker interjection. A return to drums proper struck with what sounds like implements approximating baton-diameter thickness in the service of a bedrock African pulse prime the ears for a cranium-rearranging finale.
Graves had been making recordings for years prior to this elemental statement, as a percussionist with Latin jazz bandleader Montego Joe and concurrently in the orbit of ESP-Disk and its roster of influential fire music artists including Albert Ayler, Giuseppi Logan and Lowell Davidson. An early, if relative, fecundity in the mid-1960s gave way to a tapering of activity and resulting paucity of output in the subsequent decade as Graves expanded his scholarly endeavors to include non-Western medicine and academia. That shift in focus makes the bonus disc included with this reissue all the more estimable as it visits the B bi trio a full nine years prior to their eponymous album in a performance segmented into four parts that spans nearly twice the length of its descendant. Audio engineering is again distant from optimal, but the capture works in coloring the instruments with red-line distortion and heat amidst the more cavernous aspects of the acoustics. Graves is once again a force to be reckoned with behind his augmented and perpetually ascendant kit while Doyle and Glover both rise in tongues-speaking earnestness to the occasion of the hit.

CONDITION:
THE RECORD
IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight
a WE GRADE THE VINYL AS WEAK NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions mostly sleeve scuffs - are barely visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
b The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording
c Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording
THE COVER
THE COVER IS NEAR MINT
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine nothing significant
- Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side a microscopic price code written in one corner
- Minor shelf wear noted on the spine nothing significant
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
