Item Description

ARTIST: James A.
Murray s Colored Syncopated Harmony Kings LABEL: Murray s Novelty Record Company 1252/3 TITLES: Cheer Up Kentucky / What Could Be Sweeter Dear CONDITION: V / E-V DESCRIPTION: The rarest black owned label and one of the earliest.
This circa 1921 is the only known issue on James A.
Murray s personal venture MURRAY S NOVELTY RECORD COMPANY.
Murray was a prominent entertainer and band leader in the Boston area.
The photo scan is from his later work in radio broadcasting on Boston station WMEX.
While many black Boston musicians moved to New York and made a name for themselves, the only one of this group that became a prominent jazz sideman was trombonist Aaron Thompson who recorded in New York with Clarence Williams Blue Five and the Red Onion Jazz Babies.
Musically, these are early transition to jazz sides with more of a ragtime feel.
This historic 78 was only distributed, if you can even call it that, in the Boston area, and this is the first copy to be offered on eBay.
A few scratches no effect on play.
Brown labels pasted onto white stock.
