CMU
CONTEMPORARY MUSIC UNIT
UK progressive/experimental rock group the Contemporary Music Unit CMU were formed at the beginning of the 70s. The musicians involved - initially James Gordan vocals, percussion , Ian Hamlett guitar, flute , Ed Lee bass , Terry Mortimer guitar, keyboards, viola, vocals , Larraine Odell vocals and Roger Odell drums - used the group to explore a wide variety of musical styles, from blues to jazz and beat pop. Though their efforts were not always successful, the stylistic variation employed often arguing against artistic cohesion, at least a proportion of the group s songs sounded distinctively innovative. Only the Odell brothers and Hamlett remained in the group by the advent of their second album, 1972 s Space Cabaret, having been joined by Steve Cook bass , Leary Hasson keyboards and Richard Joseph vocals, guitar . This was a more accessible, pop-orientated collection, though the group s spirit of adventure was maintained. Unfortunately the British music press were apathetic about their achievements and both albums sold poorly. As a consequence the group disbanded in 1973... AllMusic
