We proudly present Sun Ra
Arkestra member Pat Patrick’s unique baritone sax masterpiece ‘Sound Advice’.
As composer, bandleader, and full-time member of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Pat
Patrick was a visionary musician whose singular contribution to the jazz tradition
has not yet been fully recognised. As well holding down the baritone spot in
the Arkestra for 35 years, Patrick played flute and alto, composed in both jazz
and popular idioms, and was a widely respected musician, playing with Duke
Ellington, Eric Dolphy, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, with whom he
appeared on Africa/Brass. But he is best known for his crucial contributions to
key Sun Ra recordings including Angels and Demons at Play, Jazz in Silhouette
and Nubians of Plutonia, among dozens of others. But as a bandleader, Patrick
only released one LP – the almost mythical Sound Advice, recorded with his
Baritone Saxophone Retinue, a unique gathering of baritone saxophone masters
including Charles Davis and Rene Mclean. Released in
1977 on Sun Ra’s legendary Saturn Records imprint, Sound Advice is a deephued
exploration of this special instrument, a lost masterpiece of
Arkestrally-minded Ellingtonia where higher adepts of the lower cosmic tones
are heard in rare conference.

CONDITION:
·
THE RECORD:
(IMPORTANT NOTE:
unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!;
we grade records under the strong,
diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a)
WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT.
Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably
inaudible, and do not affect visual
integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and
the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b)
The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently
with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many
years!
(c)
The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which
was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on
such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not
expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d)
Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not
an inferior, digital recording!!!
·
THE COVER
The album comes without its
custom sleeve (none was ever made for this title) and will be shipped in generic white sleeve (not separately
graded but in a real nice condition)
