Paul McCartney Wings Venus And Mars 2CD DVD Super Deluxe Booklet Edition
In early 1975, Paul McCartney became the first ex-Beatle to leave the wreckage that used to be Apple Records, by re-upping his deal with Capitol/Parlophone/EMI. Not only did his McCartney Music later MPL Communications, Ltd./Inc. company obtain ownership of all of his post-Beatles catalog going back to 1970, but he returned to the legendary original Capitol label in BOTH the U.S. and the U.K. While Parlophone still distributed and numbered his U.K. albums, most of the British releases also had the famous Capitol dome logo, which Capitol U.S. had phased out in the early 1970s in favor of the C-shaped bulls-eye logo. Paul brought the original logo back, using a custom label more reminiscent of classic Capitol 78s from the 1940s than 1960s Beatle albums. Some countries did use the bulls-eye logo on the sleeves in other markets, McCartney records were issued on EMI affiliates such as Odeon, and the Apple label was still used in a few distant markets that hadn t gotten the word that the Apple era was over. By the end of 1977, Capitol had abandoned the bulls-eye C logo in favor of the classic original on all new releases - that s how strong Macca s pull was.
VENUS AND MARS was the first McCartney record released under this new arrangement. Credited solely to Wings, it was the first album to feature the new Wings lineup - Paul and the late Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, the late Jimmy McCulloch, and Joe English who replaced Geoff Britton early in the sessions . It s always been one of my favorite albums, and has been released on CD three times - on CBS Records in 1984 no bonus tracks , and twice by EMI, in 1988 and 1993, with three bonus tracks, one of which, Zoo Gang, now appears on the 2010 BAND ON THE RUN reissue. For the sixth release in the Hear Music/Concord Music Group Paul McCartney Archive Collection, the Universal Abbey Road team has outdone itself and has produced a magnificent-sounding remastered CD - far superior to any previous release.
In addition to the main album on Disc 1, Disc 2 Bonus Audio features a generous 14 tracks, including both sides of the last McCartney Apple 45, 1974 s Junior s Farm/Sally G, recorded in Nashville. This is the first time since the original 45 that both tracks have been issued together. Previously, Junior s Farm appeared on 1978 s WINGS GREATEST and the U.S. version of 1987 s ALL THE BEST , with the shorter DJ edit appearing on 2001 s WINGSPAN: HITS AND HISTORY. Sally G was issued as a bonus track on both the 1989 and 1993 CD versions of WINGS AT THE SPEED OF SOUND. Next up, also recorded in Nashville, are the swinging instrumental Walking In The Park With Eloise, made up by Paul s late dad Jim, and its B-side, the Mancini-like Bridge On The River Suite, written by Paul. Both these tracks were originally issued in 1974 as an EMI single under the name The Country Hams, and also appeared as bonus tracks on WINGS AT THE SPEED OF SOUND. Other tracks include My Carnival, originally the B-side of the 1985 Spies Like Us single, and later issued as a bonus track on the previous VENUS AND MARS CD Lunch Box/Odd Sox, an instrumental jam that appeared on the B-side of the 1980 Coming Up single, and was also a VENUS AND MARS CD bonus track and several other rare or unissued tracks, including Going To New Orleans My Carnival Hey Diddle Ernie Winfrey Mix no relation to Oprah Let s Love, written as a demo for Peggy Lee, who later recorded it with Paul producing two audio tracks, Soily and the standard Baby Face, from the One Hand Clapping film the video of that film can be found on the bonus DVD issued with the 2010 Band On The Run - Archive Collection reissue . Rounding out the Bonus Audio disc are an acoustic guitar demo, 4th Of July, originally recorded in 1974 by John Christie on Capitol Records, and produced by Dave Clark of the DC5 the original, inferior version of Rock Show and the rare single version of Letting Go, which appears to be a different take than the LP version.
The bonus DVD includes the My Carnival recording session two film shorts, Bon Voyageur, filmed in New Orleans, and Wings At Elstree, filmed during the band s September 1975 rehearsals at that studio as well as a British TV ad without narration for the album.
As always, the packaging is lavish: a beautiful hardcover book, with lots of photos, new essays, and plenty of memorabilia posters, glossy photos, backstage passes, ticket stubs, etc. The only drawback is that the pouches that contain the souvenirs are open at both ends, so they do tend to fall out be careful, so you don t lose anything.
I can t praise this release enough. Five stars all the way.
