Manic Street Preachers - Motown Junk CD signed by Richey, James, Nicky Sean with an interesting back story from Avalanche Records
I ll include the full letter so that the winner can read the whole story from Kevin Buckle Avalanche Records, Edinburgh but you can read a heavily edited version below:
Late Jan 1991 Avalanche receives a call from Sounds the music paper asking what they think of the new pop sensations Manic Street Preachers. Being a little busy in the shop I gave the simple reply a little too fond of The Clash . Clearly disappointed they asked if I had anything more humorous or controversial to add Well apart from being Welsh wearing too much make-up, not really I replied jokingly. Would we stock the new single they asked? Probably not we said. The next issue of the paper went with Avalanche Records have banned the Manics for being Welsh wearing make-up.
Anyway we forgot about it but come May, the Manics embarked on their You Love Us tour with Edinburgh the first stop. Soon after opening the shop a wee guy came in, put a CD on the counter said this is for you ran out . The said CD was Motown Junk each band member had signed it with a message. They were not wishing us well see the photos
So began a rather one-sided feud with the Manics still mentioning Avalanche Records from time to time in interviews, commenting at gigs that we had closed down when we hadn t generally not letting it go.
I bought this CD from Avalanche when they asked for sealed bids to raise funds for the Scottish Pop Music Exhibition Centre as well as a charity of the Manic s choosing back in 2017.
