What you are looking at here is a piece of history
For sale is a single sided acetate recording of one of the first commercial transatlantic telephone conversations, via the Early Bird Intelsat 1 satellite on 28th June 1965.
The recording is a conversation between a Mr A.C.B. Gray of Viskase Ltd in Croydon and Mr J.W. Durkin of Union Carbide Corporation in Centerville, Iowa.
Recorded on an Emidisc recording blank playable at 33RPM.
The disc is accompanied by a clipping from the Croydon Advertiser of 2nd July 1965 giving details of the event, plus a clipping from Business Week of May 1st 1965.
The disc is in good condition with only minor hairline surface marks. Test playing a short section reveals minor surface noise that would improve with a professional cleaning. The UK end of the conversation is loud and clear with surprisingly high sound quality, while the USA end is quieter but still easily audible. The typewritten label has darkened slightly with age and the disc is in the original plastic lined sleeve.
A fascinating artefact from the very earliest days of modern communications technology. This is certainly one a kind.
