Up for an auction is the extraordinarily rare Capitol Records pre-release promotional copy of The Beatles , also know as the White Album , which was produced several months before the album s official release date to be sent to the media and radio stations. This is incredible but this Capitol Records promotional copy comes with the vinyl that contains the ultra-rare B12 / B10 / B14 / B12 matrix numbers, which is also known as the HARRISON compressed mastering and was supposed to be destroyed upon George s insistence when he heard it during his visit to Capitol Records in 1968. In Harrison s opinion, Capitol s mastering was too compressed which altered a major number of effects on the album. This story didn t end there because the first lacquers with the compressed mastering weren t destroyed in spite of Harrison s insistence and somehow were used to make the metal stampers. The copies of The Beatles whose matrix stampers end in numbers less than 34 were pressed using these metal stampers and contain the compressed mastering. The most common matrix numbers on these Lost Harrison Compressed White Album pressings are A28 / B29 and it seems this promotional copy pressed at the Jacksonville pressing plant is the only one whose matrix numbers are lower than that. Original cardboard embossed The Beatles 1st batch gatefold cover contains a promotional Capitol Records perforated FREE punch in the upper right-hand corner of the left panel. The Jacksonville plant cover with a leading character in the form of a large dot, 0841138. Very 1st label variation, Apple with the Capitol logo perimeter print, contains all of the 7 incorrect song titles. This promotional copy features a full set of promotional memorabilia, which includes a large double-sided 23 x 34 color poster, four 8 x 10 portrait photos, one of each Beatle, featuring the Printed in USA logo in the lower left-hand corner, and an insanely rare 8 x 10 blue separator sheet. The album comes with the original Capitol Records plain white die-cut inner sleeves. The full 1st matrix numbers include the identifier of the Jacksonville plant pressing O etched on all of the sides and are as follows:
Side 1: SWBO-X1-101-B12 2 O
Side 2: SWBO-X2-101-B14 1 O
Side 3: SWBO-X3-101-B10 2 O
Side 4: SWBO-X4-101-B12 2 O
The beautiful white cover is in very clean Near Mint Minus condition and doesn t have any ring wear, soiling, splits, writing, tears, missing pieces, edge wear or scuffing. There re only just a couple of faint age discoloration spots on the front and back cover. The gatefold interior is in Near Mint condition. All of the original memorabilia, including the blue divider sheet, and inner sleeves are also in Near Mint condition. I grade the vinyl as Very Good for Side 1 / 2 and Very Good Plus for Side 3 / 4 while the labels are Very Good Plus - Side 1, Excellent Minus - Side 2, Near Mint Minus - Side 3 and Excellent - Side 4. The Side 1 / 2 vinyl contains surface hairlines and marks along with scuffs from the inner sleeve. The Side 3 / 4 also contains some light surface hairlines as well as scuffs from the inner sleeve but their amount is significantly less than on Side 1 / 2. The vinyl plays well throughout without any skips. Side 1 / 2 has some static and background noise while Side 3 / 4 sounds quite better and doesn t have much of background noise, just some static. Perhaps, the static and background noise could get reduced if the records are professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
