The Who : Live At Leeds A1 / B1 1st Press Black Lettering 12 Inserts Rare 1970

This rare first pressing with the Black lettering on the front cover plays with superb audio and with no clicks or pops. S1 has a small number of light ticks for 4/5 seconds and a handful of static moments but they are not loud. The vast majority of the side plays with stunning quality and S2 is just amazing With only minor static at the start My Generation and Magic Bus then proceed to play with a sonic quality that is outstanding. The clarity, depth and power of the audio is unlike anything I have heard before. It must be rare to find a first pressing as exceptional as this one and the vinyl itself is visually stunning also. It is rumoured that only 300 were pressed with the black print on the front cover but nobody knows exactly how true that is

The iconic brown cardboard cover is incredibly clean and remains perfectly intact which is a genuine rarity. The 12 inserts are STUNNING The majority including the Marquee poster are Mint and only 2/3 have very minimal creasing. The original inner sleeve has also been preserved very well with vert little wear. This is one STUNNING package

Visual description

The vinyl is stunning and still has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen and I can only locate a couple of very faint sleeve removal hairlines on each side. There is one small speck on S1 but visually it is as close to perfect as is possible. There is no groove wear and the Track Record labels are super clean with no spindle wear on S1 and not very much on S2.

Play grading

The intro on Young Man has only a couple of very quiet static ticks and the first vocal only section has no background at all. There are a couple of seconds of minor static just as the second vocal ends and it continues to play with great power and depth. The vast majority of the long mid instrumental passage is as new - each note is so clean - and the only intrusion is a handful of light ticks just before the next vocal comes in. The remainder is close to perfect with just half of second of light static prior to the final vocal. I will grade as Ex but the majority is certainly better than that.

Substitute plays with great quality from start to finish with no interference. The clarity and power of the audio is so impressive and there is no distortion on the top end. A Mint- version for sure.

The intro on Summertime Blues is stunning and you can easily turn it up to max The opening vocal is just as strong and from then on it plays with phenomenal power and definition and barely any background. I say barely - there is just one very light tick during the mid instrumental but that does not qualify as interference The final vocal has no intrusion and overall the audio is so deep and strong and it is obvious the vinyl has not been played very much based on the sonic quality. Mint-

The intro on Shakin All Over has no interference but the opening vocal does have a couple of brief static moments for some reason, they are not loud though. From then on it plays very clearly and the first part of the instrumental section is superb So loud and zero intrusion. There is a half second static sound a little further in but it is not intrusive and this section really does play with incredible power and depth. The end vocal has no interference aside from one very light tick and there is just one more very brief static sound right at the end. Ex is a fair assessment of the audio here.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The classic My Generation... on S2 has only a couple of minor static moments at the start of the first vocal and then plays with very clear and powerful audio. The first instrumental is STUNNING and the See Me, Feel Me... excerpt could not play any better, the playback is incredible The quiet section that follows has no background and the next vocal is equally as good. From then on it plays with sublime power and depth and with such delicate precision during the quieter moments. I have heard a number of these down the years and this is undoubtedly one of the finest. Loud and quiet in equal measure the sonic quality is just breath-taking I mean aside from one or two seconds of minimal static near the start the clarity, depth and power of the audio is out of this world It has that clean aesthetic CD like quality but with the warmth and depth that you only find on vinyl. If you get the impression that I am impressed by this audio then you would be right Moon s percussion is of course so strong but Townshend s work is incredible here. Taking in a couple of other tracks this is audio of the highest standard and through to the end it plays as new with no intrusion. If the opening vocal is Ex then the other 14 minutes are Mint I am confident in saying. Wow

The entire intro on Magic Bus is perfect and Daltrey s opening vocal has no background either. It continues to play with tremendous depth and Entwistle s deep bass is the main reason for. I cannot compliment this version highly enough - every vocal and instrumental section play with fantastic power and definition and nowhere is this more obvious than during the high octane section just prior to the final section. Breath-taking No distortion here and the final section more than keeps up this standard. Running at nearly 8 minutes long this has to grade as Mint such is the quality. It truly is an unbelievable version.

In summary this very first pressing plays with stunning quality and S2 especially is as close to perfect as could be. S1 has only a handful of static moments and yet the vast majority of the side still plays with exceptional quality. For such a powerful album the complete lack of distortion is arguably the most impressive feature but there are also no clicks or pops which is a genuine rarity for this album. There cannot be many first pressings with the rare Black lettering that play as well as this one - a genuine collectors item for sure.

The Gatefold, Inserts Inner Sleeve

This plain brown cardboard MacNeill cover with the black print is in lovely condition for once. It has been so well preserved and may well be the strongest / cleanest I have seen. The top edges are very clean with no marking and only minimal creasing and the bottom edges are perfect. The thin spine has no rubbing / wear and only the top left corner has very minimal creasing. The front cover is superb with just one minor crimp on the right edge and the back cover is just as impressive with only a couple of minor specks and minor discolouration running down the spine but that is being very picky The inside of the gatefold is in superb shape and with only minor creasing near the top and the staples front and back are still firmly in place. This really is in remarkable condition when you consider the flimsy card that it was produced with.

The 12 inserts are in fantastic condition and it is obvious they have hardly ever been looked at. They are totally unmarked and only two have a minor corner crease. As this is a first press it has the large MARQUEE poster, the Live At Leeds one came later.

The original poly-lined Plastic Bags... inner sleeve date coded 0670 has no side splits and just one tiny tear on the central aperture. It is unmarked apart from some very faint age related fading around the edges and only a little creasing.
