Item Description

THE STRAWBS: STRAWBERRY MUSIC SAMPLER A genuine original copy of this absolutely MASSIVE rarity.
This is by far the rarest and most sought after 60s Folk-Rock LP and, as Wikipedia would have it, one of the rarest LPs in the UK Only Three Five other copies of this LP are known to exist This is your chance to own perhaps the last available copy of this truly legendary rarity.
In great condition throughout.
99p start and no reserve.
Don t miss out Vinyl private pressing UK : private pressing of less than 100 between Oct 1969 and Feb 1970 .
The Sampler was released as a publishers demo record - a run of less than 100 copies - designed to get other artists to cover Cousins and Hooper s songs.
Its importance for Strawbs fans is that it includes all the tracks culled from the first version of the group s first album, as well as a few other demos and early versions.
It was produced between the first Strawbs LP and their second.
The private press LP is in a plain white unlaminated cover with red printing setting out the tracks, writers, and at the bottom, Dave Cousins and Tony Hooper s contact details.
Simple white label with track details.
In 1969, the Strawbs assembled a privately pressed sampler of unreleased material to circulate among publishers to solicit possible cover versions.
Actually, some of the songs would appear, in the exact same or different versions, on subsequent Strawbs releases.
However, some of the tracks were never issued, and as only 99 copies were pressed with only two known to survive , it probably qualifies as the ultimate 1960s British folk-rock rarity Among the 17 songs are different versions of songs that have appeared on the Sandy the Strawbs, Preserves Uncanned, Dragonfly, and Grave New World albums, as well as one tune, the lush pop-folk ballad Whichever Way the Wind Blows, which was never released anywhere else.
As it turns out, half a dozen of these do appear in exactly the same version on the Sandy the Strawbs releases, but what the heck that still leaves almost a dozen cuts that are otherwise unavailable.
Although the differences between those and the other takes in circulation are sometimes slight, there are some notable and sometimes intriguing differences, as in the ambient pub voices and piano of How Everyone but Sam Was a Hypocrite? the strings on the Cousins-sung versions of And You Need Me and Stay Awhile the jaunty orchestral arrangement of Sweetling and a downright strange instrumental waltz rendition of And You Need Me that segues into Josephine.

Sweetling Hooper YEAR: 1969-70 COUNTRY: UK LABEL: Private Pressing GRADING SLEEVE: VG/VG The untreated sleeve shows some slight discolouration and some light ringwear.
There are three small spots two to the front of the sleeve and one to near the edge to the rear of the sleeve.
The edges are sharp and clean with just some very slight rubbing to the top of the spine.
There are no nasty stains and no tears on rips to the sleeve.
This is quite remarkable when the coarseness of the material is taken into account.
RECORD: VG Under bright light the record shows a few light surface marks.
There are no feelable or substantial marks whatsoever.
The vinyl retains its deep lustre.
The labels attest to the fact that the record has had no or minimal play with no spidering at all.
The record has been listened to it its entirety.
There is some very light intermittent crackle audible during some quieter passages and some pops at the end of Who Knows Where the Time Goes but that is it.
The above record grading is based on Record Collector magazine system: MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality.
The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.
Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality.
The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch.
Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
