lt gt lt gt lt gt lt gt lt gt lt gt lt gt lt gt The A CID SYMPHONY played throughout California, including the Monterey Pop Festival they played off stage on the festival grounds , and San Francisco s The Human Be In, but never recorded a follow-up LP. The style of A-cid Symphony is a bit acid folk with fusions of Middle Eastern influences with blues folk edges... It uses a raga-like slightly droning and flowing effect, with instruments like dulcimer, guitar...Unquestionably a harbinger of the times, A Cid Symphony a folk-and-ethnic music collective that incorporated instruments as wide-ranging as dulcimer, hand-held brass, and Hindustani ankle bells into their extended Middle Eastern-cum-country and folk music drones was instigated and helmed by Dustin Mark Miller. Miller, was a part of the mid- 60s Free Speech Movement at UC Berkeley, spending his time selling protest records to raise money for the movement. The musical passion stuck, so in 1966 he enlisted old pal and neighbor Charles Ewing, whom he had known since kindergarten, and Ernie Fischbach to start a folk/ethnic flower-child band aligned with the San Francisco Diggers. Ewing was an avid flamenco guitar aficionado, and he had met Fischbach while the two were in graduate school together at Cal State Long Beach. The two shared a passion for music, and Ewing soon discovered Fischbach could play any instrument with strings, as well as drums and harmonica. The trio converged in Los Angeles and A Cid originally Acid Symphony was born. In Berkeley the trio hooked up with Dustin Mark Miller. Miller was attending the University of California at Berkeley, where he d become involved in the school s free speech movement. Miller had known Ewing since childhood. The two parties quickly discovered common musical ground and as the A Cid Symphony began experimenting with a unique blend of Eastern and Western musical genres. Their performances began to attract media attention and following a write-up in the Los Angeles Times, the four decided to head for San Francisco. Once in San Francisco they met music columnist Ralph Gleason who introduced them to Fantasy Records executive Max Weiss. Intrigued by their bizarre fusion of styles, Weiss gave the group access to Fantasy s studio, where they began recording their debut. The epic album unfolds with Eastern and Western instruments dulcimer, guitar, sarod, sitar and cultural genres country, blues, flamenco, jazz, folk-psych and raga . The results have a certain quiet dignity and are quite impressive given they sound like improvisational pieces. Anyone who enjoys material such as Magic Carpet or post-Mighty Baby Habibiya will almost certainly find this collection engaging. A Cid Symphony track listing: side 1 1.
