Record Grading System MINT: M The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality.
The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.
Records advertised as sealed or un-played should be Mint.
Note Just because an item may be described as Still Sealed SS or Factory Sealed FS does not necessarily make the item mint as seam splits, cover creases, fading and manufacturing defects can still occur.
NEAR MINT NM The record has previously been removed from the cover and has been played but there is very little indication of being played.
There are no defects on the cover or record worthy of mention.
An allowable blemish on a near mint LP would be something like a mild corner bump on the cover or a faint edge crease.
The vinyl would be allowed only the very faintest of a whispy hairline and a spindle mark on each label.
Any more than 2 blemishes on each cover and vinyl would relegate the album to Excellent.
EXCELLENT: EX The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality.
The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.
Spindle marks are visible as is hairlines and scuffs but these would all be faint and few.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks such has many hairlines scuffing and the occasional light scratch.
Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
A major defect would be a clicking during playback or jumping of the needle.
Any background noise would not be noticeable during normal playback.
The cover will have moderate and noticeable storage wear such as ring wear, age spotting edge rubbing.GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.
The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
Has excessive storage wear, major ring wear, and large portions of the covers original colour has rubbed off.
Scuffing is caused when a person attempts to wipe the surface of a record with a shirt sleeve, general purpose rag or when a record rubs against the cardboard inner when inserted into the cover without an inner sleeve.
Condition Grading: Faint - any wear or defect is barely visible.
Mild - wear or defect is present but does not detract from the overall condition of the item.
Moderate - wear or defect is noticeable but not beyond reasonable limits of collectability.
Major - wear or defect is serious, obvious and extreme care must be taken not to cause further damage to the item when handling.
Critical - wear or defect has caused item failure, breakage or repair is not worthwhile, practical or possible.
Parts of item are missing or decayed.
