I collected for over 50 years and now it is time to let someone else enjoy them..
The album was played a few times, probably at parties, placed into a vinyl record protector like all my records, and maintained in air conditioned and humidity controlled homes.
It does have a few surface scratches and spindle search marks on the label that can be seen in the photos, but it plays well.
The cover is in very nice condition, with the writing on the spline undamaged and readable.
Because it was in plastic, the edges are in great condition.
I do not see ring wear on the cover.
This is a very thin and flimsy cover, so many were easily damaged.
There is an inch and a half rub on the top spline, but it is not broken through.
There is a scuff mark on the upper right-hand portion of the front cover that was on it at the original record store, which can be seen in the photos.
I would have gotten another, but there were no more.
This album was originally released with spelling mistakes.
Producer Tony Visconti was spelled Tonny on the label, but that was corrected by the time this one was pressed.
The back cover does have the expected error of drummer Woody Woodmansey being spelled Woodmansley .
Due to the value of this high prized record, this item has been forged twice, in Japan in 1978 and in Italy in 1983.
The fakes are easy to identify.
1 The counterfeit cover is smooth and the original has a matt textured feel which is more defined.
2 Bowie s boot goes all the way to the right side edge of the cover on the forgery and on the original, the entire boot ends about a half inch from the edge.
This is the usual method of telling them apart.
Also, on these cropped versions the clock is almost gone on the right.
3 The inner color of the paper cover is white on the forgery and grey on the original.
4 The label on the Fake is a lighter shade of black than the original, also the typeset on the counterfeit is thinner and taller, fakes also have a circled R near the 1971 date rather than the circled P as on the original and this one.
5 The matrix on the run out groove is larger on the counterfeit, not so well stamped and omits 420 from the numbers.
Additionally, the matrix faces the label rather than pointing away from it as on the original.
6 The run out groove on this record has the proper 6338 041 1Y//1 420 impressed on side one and 6338 041 2Y//1 420 impressed on side two.
