This version of Swordfishtrombones was mistakenly released in Australia/NZ by Asylum Records (Waits' previous label) instead of Island Records, his new label. This was basically semantics as both companies were owned by WEA. Waits objected to the use of his own cover artwork which was used without his permission. Very few copies were pressed and most were recalled and thrown out. Someone who worked at WEA reputedly pulled a box of 50 records out of the rubbish bin and these are the copies in circulation. Most copies seem to have a crease in the lower right corner of the cover where the box hit the bottom of the bin.

There are a few releases of Swordfishtrombones on the Elektra/Asylum label:
- The "most common" version is the Australian/New Zealand one (this release)
- There is also a European version pressed in Germany ([r20891746])
- And there is a Canadian version ([r21642919])
- It was also released on Cassette ([r21643042])
