It was originally released in December 1972, with a U.S.
release in April 1973.
A Rolling Stone readers poll in 2012 ranked Made in Japan the sixth best live album of all time.
Made in Japan was recorded live over three nights during 15 17 August 1972 at Festival Hall, Osaka and at Budokan, Tokyo, Japan.
Four of the tracks come from the album Machine Head which had been released earlier that year.
The album was at first seen as somewhat unimportant by the band members, and only Roger Glover and Ian Paice showed up to mix it.
It is organist Jon Lord s favorite Deep Purple album, and he describes the release as follows: Deep Purple was at the height of its powers.
That double album was the epitome of what we stood for in those days.
It wasn t meant to be released outside of Japan.
The Japanese said, Will you please make a live album? We said, We don t make live albums we don t believe in them.
We finally said okay, but said we wanted the rights to the tapes because we didn t want the album to be released outside of Japan.
That album only cost about 3,000 to make.
It sounded pretty good, so we said to Warner Bros., Do you want this? They said, No, live albums don t happen.
They wound up putting it out anyway and it went platinum in about two weeks.

Look very rare No Mother Stampers At 3 o clock to the matrix The vinyl On visual inspection the vinyls look absolutely superbe, in fact I find it hard to even see a blemish at all on the playing surfaces Any marks that could possibly be seen would be sleeve removal perhapes the odd scuff only, Importantly there are no marks that caused any nasty loud clicks or pops throughout the audio.
The Audio Quality I have played this through track for track as usual at very loud volume on a top system prior to this listing three times.
The audio is rated near as mint throughout in my opinion One of the best sounding copies that I have heard this will blow you away in fact I played this so loud it nearly blew the roof off This is cristal clear and vibrant through out.
This plays with no signs of any distortion or that this has been overplayed at all in my opinion I can mention that I heard three static type ticks that was at the quiet intro to Sweet Child In Time but nothing that spoilt the overall enjoyment of this album.
I would class myself as highly critacle Please look at my completed listings of records that i have sold of this calaber and you will see that i normally get it right Audio is graded at the top You will find the audio quality on this vinyl hard to surpass on all frequencies I would grade the audio at least excellent plus to very near as mint through out in my opinion Please note I always make this disclaimer Please allow for the odd very light static crackle/ tick/ticks not consistant throughout the audio Although i never heard any major problems at all and have given my honest opinion, this is a genuine 41 year old vinyl not a reissue that would have originally been played on a 41 year old system points to note This has been stored in a case laying dormant for the best part of 35 years A build up of dirt and dust in the grooves over the years causes static crackle and ticks From my personal experiance a constant clean before each play reduces this problem and subsequently enhances the audio quality The Labels This features the original purple labels in superbe condition feature Gramophone Co Ltd..
