LITTLE LAMB I have no answer for you little lamb, I can help you out....
but I cannot help you in.
Sometimes you think that life is hard, And this is only one of them, My heart is breaking for you little lamb, I can help you out....
but we may never meet again.
DRAGONFLY Dragonfly, fly by my window, You and I still have a way to go, Don t know why you hang around my door, I dont live here any more, Since you ve gone I never know, I go on, but I miss you so.
Dragonfly, don t keep me waiting, I m waiting, can t you see me, I m waiting? When we try we ll have a way to go, Dragonfly, you ve been away too long, How did two rights make a wrong? Since you ve gone, I never know, I go on, But I miss you so in my heart, I feel the pain, Keeps coming back again.
Dragonfly, fly by my window, I m flying, can t you see me, I m flying? You and I can find a way to see, Dragonfly, the years ahead will show, How little we really know, Since you ve gone, it s never right, They go on, the lonely nights, Come on home and make it right, My heart is aching for you little lamb, I can help you out.....but I cannot help you in.
PAUL McCARTNEY WINGS: Red Rose Speedway LP.
UK ORIGINAL PRESSING, 1973.
APPLE LABEL: PCTC 251 .
The bigger an album sells, the longer it remains in the charts, the longer it remains in the charts, any label, insert or cover alterations however minor, will contain elements of the variations.
Red Rose Speedway was released on the 4th May, 1973 and reached No.5 in the UK charts, residing there for four consecutive months.
Then record shops would still be ordering copies for the rest of the year because there was still be a demand, if much lower, I m naming this a 1973 original.
This gatefold cover is positively an original without Braille on the back cover s top left corner, I have not encountered encountered many with label text affecting Red Rose Speedway.
They exist in very small numbers, but they existed in 1973 and in such amounts, none of this has been documented, certainly not by myself until now.
I checked the Discogs website and as I fully expected there was nothing and I welcome the opportunity, this is ebay and every UK variation, however minor, has to be declared, examined and placed before potential buyers, of course Garrod made covers without Braille but they are without doubt in a minority, so all pressing details of the original records need to be given in full.
I do that anyway, but find it absurd for an extremely rare unplayed 1973 pressing, the record cover and inner sleeve have been together untouched for 42 years.
I am a great believer in consistency and that means a few other 1973 EMI pressings simply have to have the same small label publication amendments.
So many EMI label text alterations happened after March,1973, a matter of weeks affected the same vinyl, but printers were hard at work making the subtle changes.
When you include the Apple label, you enter a legal war still raging in the courts concerning the Beatles breaking up and the millions of pounds and dollars surrounding the Lennon / McCartney songwriting partnership.
The release of Red Rose Speedway was only three years to the actual month, after the greatest band of all time separated, Paul and John spent them establishing their latest solo songs had nothing to do with the Beatles contract.
The band no longer existed but Northern Songs demanded music publishing copyright payment, Paul McCartney and John Lennon hotly disputed that and they also had to battle their own Apple publishing company George Harrison was so disillusioned by the greed of the demands on their solo albums, as late as 1975, George included the Apple logo on his Extra Texture album and related singles, but the Apple logo had a large bite taken out of it When I list solo Beatles records up to 1976, I include subtle label / cover changes, but in 1973 the legal battle was at a peak of small victories, you actually had two of Paul s music publishing companies on these Red Rose Speedway , I also believe Paul somewhere managed to not feature the ever present Apple logo of the cover, the book and the labels for all the 1973 first pressings / originals.
Check your copy and you will discover there is not an Apple logo anywhere on the cover or among the large book s credits, only the Apple text.
Well, this time this pair of labels have omitted even the Apple text credit that existed until 1976...
on the day the Beatles contract with EMI expired.
The removal of Gramophone was hardly a surprise because it was deleted at the end of March, 1973, it was a mistake to print that in the first place for the May, 1973 release.
I give all my lifelong experience as a collector and a professional record seller in my descriptions, which is very demanding, so I do not have the time or inclination to enter email discussions, please do not send me your variations on the UK Red Rose Speedway first pressings, middle stage pressings or this, the final 1973 pressings.
The vinyl is exactly the same on all the 1973 records and so are the textured labels, the superb quality gatefold covers and stapled books, this is all about with Paul and Linda taking on and beating the greedy vultures who wanted to cash in on his latest songs.
John and Yoko did the same, George did finally shake free, but fated to suffer many more court cases and having to live with constantly being sued.
The label text I am referring will be detailed in full below, the various music publishing changes will be found for most of the top artists who wrote their own songs, in this early 1970 s era, David Bowie is a perfect example and he never had a song writing partner from a previous band.
THESE LABELS WERE PRINTED JUST WITHIN THE PERIOD WHEN SOME EMI TEXT WAS YET TO BE AMENDED OR JUST PRINTED IN ERROR.
AT 9 O CLOCK UNDER THE YEX.903 / YEX.904 MAITRIX PER SIDE: P 1973 MPL Communications Inc.
An EMI Recording The Gramophone Company Limited was replaced with EMI Record Ltd.
Located at 9 o clock as the last of the three items, it will help to view my label pictures but I am making direct comparisons and a personal comment here and there, especially for the next item...
that requires capital letters to celebrate a victory THE SAME LABEL TEXT FOUND ON PAUL McCARTNEY WINGS PREVIOUS UK RECORDS, IF NOW WITH THE GREEDY Northern Songs COMPLETELY OUT OUTMANEUVERED BY PAUL S OWN MUSIC PUBLISHING COMPANY BY 1973 McCartney Music Ltd.
ATV Music Ltd.
Located at 6 o clock underneath the one songwriting credit per side for all the tracks: McCartney Regardless of the pressing sequence, all the original pressings had a label design as unique as it gets, a red, blue white Red Rose Speedway logo from the cover artwork.
Strangely only some of the first pressings had the white Wings logo found in the book and on the bottom rim of the back cover advertising the Fan club.
These final labels have not had the logo, but because I have seen so few, I am not ruling out the possibility.
I will repeat, there is not an Apple logo anywhere on the labels or the extensive cover artwork, that includes a huge stapled book, applying to any of the 1973 pressings.
Which becomes a positive statement from Paul, because the Apple logo became an identifying first issue item on his three earlier solo Wings albums, McCartney , Ram Wild Life.
Then a few months later after Red Rose Speedway , move forward to December, 1973 and the Apple logo was back...becoming the method to identify the first pressings of Band on the Run .
As I said, none of this documented but the deeper you dig, the more Red Rose Speedway was a very special album for Paul and Linda, if only for the stunning music MAITRIX: YEX 903 - 4 / YEX 904 - 3 Once again, there was not an ending U letter stamped in 1973, - 3 /- 3 endings are typical of first pressed records, so just one digit rise on one side only, places the record firmly in 1973 and definitely within the 16 weeks of the UK chart residency.
EMI STAMPING CODES ROL 3 / OD 3 No comments required, both sides sourced from the 3rd mothers is typical of any big selling album s original pressings.
ORIGINAL 1973 EMI INNER SLEEVE, THAT PICTURE HAD TO BE DELETED AS WELL, A STANDARD PLAIN WHITE EMI TYPE WITH CURVED CORNERS, Made In Gt.
Britain AND A PATENT NUMBER.
I ran out of pictures to include the inner sleeve due to equally lavish packaging, a plain white sleeve is not exactly essential when the spine of a 1973 gatefold cover is still like new and completely unworn, with pure white lettering THE INNER SLEEVE IS IN UNUSED NEAR MINT CONDITION.
Before I detail the cover, there is another variation that took place positively after the event of the pre-release manufacturing, there are supposed to be a few extremely rare laminated covers made at the same time.
During all my genuine lengthy experience with all Beatles related albums, which includes buying Red Rose Speedway on the day of issue in May,1973, I have never seen one.
I keep an open mind on such matters but surely if a first UK pressing existed, I would have seen one, I was there when record fairs first began and haunted new and second hand record shops obsessively during the 1960 s, 1970 s and infinitely.
I have not ruled out the possibility but until I have one in my hands to examine, they will remain an unknown factor.
There are many other possibilities because foreign pressings used UK artwork templates and UK connected countries could easily have made them, then the questionability about being authentic to May 73 arises, before ebay record sellers switching re-issues for original records always existed and I suspect that could be the most likely scenario.
Please bear in mind forgeries and counterfeiting only exist when there is a demand in the first place, currently on ebay several so called, Beatles specialists are openly selling blatantly counterfeit Beatles records and memorabilia.
One final word, following Paul s innovative idea to say Hello to Stevie Wonder in Braile, would not have impressed EMI s budget In this same first half of the 70 s decade, the 1974 first issue of the Who s Odds Sods LP also had Braille on the back cover to list the tracks etc.
but it was thoughtfully provided for their blind fans.
As soon as the first edition covers were made, Polydor/Track printed standard covers because of the expense involved, Paul was saying hello to just the one person The wear those dots caused can be seen on ebay today .
Now that is out the way, I can get on with this genuine 1973, original Red Rose Speedway gatefold cover.
MAY, 1973 Garrod Lofthouse PRINTED GATEFOLD COVER, WITHOUT THE MESSAGE IN BRAILLE.
THE PRINTING DATE IS ENCODED AS 7305 , THAT HAD TO BE THE FINAL SCHEDULE BECAUSE BY THEN, THE ALBUMS WERE PACKAGED AND ON THE ROAD BEING DISTRIBUTED TO BRITISH RECORD SHOPS.
I dislike speculation without solid facts, but a 4th May release does sound like EMI had Garrod printing covers right up to and past the release date.
It does suggest that was the most likely time for this and the other covers without the Braille message to be made, the order of the record pressing remained unchanged and they were placed at random into the covers.
WITH A SUPERB STAPLED 12 PAGE COLOUR BOOK, PRINTED ON SEMI-GLOSSY PAPER.
Please see my pictures for how superb the artwork is, included are full musician details, album credits and complete lyrics for the album.
I have showed all the pages, which are all still precisely how the fantastic large book was first stapled in.
In fact, the staples are the only thing showing any form of ageing after 42 years, like virtually all first issues they have rusted inside but unlike most originals, not outside.
I must stress how the white pages are the original 1973 pure white colour, without any signs of ever being turned, no creases ot tears and brand new, to fold and glue a bulging cover constructed from heavy duty cardboard, a few folding creases or stress lines were there from day one.
This cover has never been used and stored inside a plastic outer sleeve since, 1973.
The front is absolutely perfect, no fading or rubbing, the only rubbing wear is as minimal as it gets for vulnerable to storage and use, matt cardboard cover.
The heavy book added to the standing pressure but the bottom edges and corners only have the lightest possible pressure and brushing.
This cover has become notorious for horrific wear, the back has mild rubbing where the top of the record s internal position was resting for all those decades of non usage.
An unavoidable record impression is part of that but that is only gentle on the back compartment and the front is unaffected due to the thick cardboard and being unused.
It took an unplayed record to survive so superbly and I am mighty proud to present such a beautiful first UK pressing of Red Rose Speedway.
I cannot bring Excellent into the grading for this cover and an unplayed record must be taken into account or I might as well give up hunting for such rarities.
Please see my pictures for my logic and then check the average condition of the covers and books.
THE BOOK IS IN UNUSED, UNAGED MINT CONDITION AND THE COVER IS IN NEAR MINT CONDTION.
THE RECORD IS IN UNPLAYED/MINT CONDITION.

Recorded March - June September - October 1972, In Los Angeles And Olympic Studios, Barnes.
Alan Parsons -Sound Engineer Produced By Paul Linda McCartney Still only a year after the Beatles split up in May, 1970, Paul s short period as a solo artist or a duo with Linda was over, he formed Wings in August, 1971, recording a third album, Wild Life , released 18th December, 1971, it was no longer credited to Paul McCartney , only to Wings .
Along with Paul and Linda were, ex-Moody Blues Denny Laine on guitar and vocals, plus Danny Siewell played the drums.
All five had played together earlier in the year on Ram so it was a debut album in name only for Wings, a short holiday and they got back together in the studio.
After the complexities for the crafted production for the June,1971 Ram LP, Paul returned again to much simpler productions, as found on his 1970, McCartney album, only this time he was no longer the sole musician.
Wings were still a new band and finding their feet, new members would later on expand them to a quartet, they certainly were not short of material with Paul s songwriting genius as inspired as ever.
He wanted a quickly recorded album and the songs became even more important, how many newly formed bands had the benefit of a McCartney on hand to provide them with such long proven composing genius? You simply could not get any better than that Anyone who lived through this post Beatles era during the early 1970 s, immediately following in the wake of the greatest band on the planet, will remember how Paul became the ex-Beatle who was hung, drawn and quartered by the British music press.
So viciously, that was unparalleled in the 1960 s decade when respect and dignity were the basics for journalists, who s job was to review music and not launch personal attacks.
A great deal centered around Linda s involvement as well but most of the English music journalists now considered themselves above the artists who s music gave them a living.
It was a progressive music period in 1970 - 1971,there was an unbelievably spiteful criticism of Wild Life, it still annoys me all these years later I regularly bought all three weekly UK music papers and they all did a real hatchet job on the album, that of course had a really drastic affect on Wild Life sales.
With my unbroken Beatles following since 63, I could not believe how the music press stigmitised anyone walking up to a record shop counter to ask to buy....one of the world s greatest artist s latest album or single Paul responded to the wave of criticism by recording Mary Had A Little Lamb and releasing a nursery rhyme orientated single, to add humour to the relentless onslaught.
Wings Paul were down.....
but far from out For 1972, the line-up of Paul, Linda, Denny Laine and Danny Siewell, was boosted by the addition of ex-Grease Band lead guitarist Henry McCullough.
They put aside releasing an album, only singles during 1972 and instead concentrated on touring and taking a a long time sharpening up the band.
Meanwhile recording an unbelievable amount of music, without quite knowing what would be used for the second Wings album.
A famous story about the first gigs was quite extraordinary, considering how Wings would go on to become one of the biggest touring bands in the world and indeed, complete world tours to sold out stadiums in only a few years time.
Beatles? That meant nothing now, Paul was determined to get back to the most basic, humble beginnings and literally work his way back up, he did it the hard way It was true how they just turned up unannounced at British University s Colleges and offered to play for a few beers They played to a handful of peoples at first and many were unaware who the bass guitarist and lead vocalists was, Paul had been stung by the criticism and his next album was going to confound the critics but it could wait until Wings were road hardened.
Linda in particular had been viciously attacked, like Yoko, she had to live with unbelievable hostility and she would emerge as an important member of Wings, along the way would be several arrests of the McCartney s for possessing marijuana They set off to tour Sweden and the inclusion of a lead guitarist soon gave them a fuller sound and Wings were now glowing with a musical chemistry, ready to record their second album in 1973, Red Rose Speedway.
Paul s songwriting genius was in such full flow and the material so prolific, at first a double album was considered, the rejected tracks would filter through as B-sides and bonus tracks, for example, Seaside Woman was recorded during the lengthy sessions and even today some of the tracks remain unreleased.
So you can imagine the standard of the material whittled down to just one single album and in my humble opinion, the tracks on Red Rose Speedway still rank alongside Paul s finest ever songwriting.
The Red Rose Speedway title was directly named after Paul s housekeeper, Rose, and unlike Wildlife with such poor sales, this time around his name did figure in the credits, but not on the outside gatefold cover, only the labels and the stapled book had Paul McCartney Wings .
As a very rare unplayed record I will respect that by not playing it myself, instead I will give a personal opinion about the fantastic music on the album, having described the lavish cover in more than enough depth.
People have dismissed Red Rose Speedway as a stop gap album before Wings recorded Band On The Run , but that was never true and Side 2 is really similar to Side 2 on Abbey Road, for a medley of connected, but individual songs or suites.
The incredible songs are indeed to the standard of Paul s input to Abbey Road , for goodness sake, 1972 was only three years after making that Abbey Road album and yet the stigmatisation has carried on into the 21st century Fellow McCartney / Wings fans will not need me to praise a much loved album so perhaps this is not such a good idea to discuss the music with such a personall bias, I am not a salesman just a long term fan who cares deeply about presenting this fantastic album in the ultimate condition.
I will just go into the track I selected the lyrics from, first, also discuss a very unusual instrumental with a glorious melody and space age sound effects, befitting a Pink Floyd track, Loup First Indian On The Moon .
That genius of Paul s was not restricted to just love songs, this was a masterpiece of a track and if hearing it for the first time, you would think it was early 70 s Pink Floyd Paul s bass was immense here and Wings demonstrated how capable they were of performing avante garde, but the track of the album has to be the haunting melody of Little Lamb Dragonfly, one of my all time favourite Wings songs.
The genius of Paul s composing and singing are there to marvel at and enjoy, but this was a very personal and emotional performance, at the same time when John and Paul were opposed in a law court and their brotherly love had been stretched to breaking point.
Communication s were via letters to the music press and even more so, within songs, album covers and inserts.
The lyrics were directly written to John Lennon and therefore could only be deeply emotional and moving, after John s 1971 Imagine track, How Do You Sleep , had torn into Paul, he responded with commendable gentleness, firstly with the Wildlife track Dear Friend , then this really touching Little Lamb / Dragonfly , if you read them at the top of the page, they will convey the sincerity and a longing to end a painful feud that had gone too far, it was time for reconciliation.
I m sure Dragonfly acted to help melt the ice, the next year in 1974, John and Paul were back together inside a recording studio with other musicians such as Stevie Wonder, who had that Braille message on the cover, yet another coincidence.
The whole session is available on bootlegs and well worth hearing if only for how John and Paul sang together on great versions of Stand By Me .
Little Lamb/Dragonfly is such a beautiful song and knowing the sound quality of an unplayed first pressing will be simply stunning, is very frustrating, but I have ny own copy Roy R M RECORDS.
My lifetime s love of music and records began at a very young age, the arrival of the Beatles and the 1960 s decade in general had a very profound effect.
It was only natural to bring all my first hand experience of collecting vinyl into becoming a professional record seller.
Nearly thirty years ago we entered into the wonderful atmosphere of record fairs with the highest possible standards set.
When the Internet became the world s new market place for vinyl, in 2001 it was time to join ebay.

Ebay were aware of that happening and have increased their minimum postal cost for LP s to 7.00, that figure has been enforced by the UK Post Office and it will become our UK First Class, Recorded Delivery cost for albums up to the value of 46.
A temporary reduction this week means we can now post LP s for 5, but who knows how long before the Post Office return to 7?
