GUARANTEED Even though it contained no hits, The Man Who Sold the World, for most intents and purposes, is the beginning of David Bowie s classic period.
Working with guitarist Mick Ronson and producer Tony Visconti for the first time, Bowie developed a tight, twisted heavy guitar rock that appears simple on the surface but sounds more gnarled upon each listen.
The mix is off-center, with the fuzz-bass dominating the compressed, razor-thin guitars and Bowie s strangled, affected voice.
The sound of The Man Who Sold the World is odd, but the music is bizarre itself, with Bowie s bizarre, paranoid futuristic tales melded to Ronson s riffing and the band s relentless attack.
Musically, there isn t much innovation on The Man Who Sold the World -- it is almost all hard blues-rock or psychedelic folk-rock -- but there s an unsettling edge to the band s performance, which makes the record one of Bowie s best albums EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY STEPHEN THOMAS ERLEWINE, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/ Bowie s Man who sold the world was one of only two albums he released for Mercury label and is one of his rarest.
What makes this particular title so rare is a very unusual combination: about 95 of all pressings are either: a COUNTERFEIT, BOOTLEG PRESSINGS recognizable by the shoddy, uneven-looking label and hand-stamped matrix number in the trail-off vinyl , OR: b Subsequent reissues on RCA label with completely different covers .
Only a handful of surviving copies are genuine, authentic MERCURY pressings, and good luck finding a copy in a condition as beautiful as the one we proudly present here.
NEAR MINT WHITE LABEL PROMO? NOT A CHANCE THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES such as the one we have here were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead.
These records are generally considered to be the first among equals : the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
b The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings.
Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic.
Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording c White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title.
We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 200:1.
d The record comes in a poly-lined stock inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years e Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording COVER COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT, STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL SHRINK WRAP The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover: - Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side a microscopic price code written in one corner NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER: - No split seams - No ring wear - No cut-out drill holes.
