7 E. BERLINER 78 CORNET SOLO - ONE OF THE EARLIEST MADE IN BRITAIN AUGUST 1898

On offer is one of the earliest disc records made in Britain. Gramophone inventor Emile Berliner sent his assistant Fred Gaisberg to London in the summer of 1898 to organise a recording studio and base for his European recording venture, choosing a hotel basement in Maiden Lane, just off The Strand. According to Gaisberg s diaries, recording commenced on or about the 7th August 1898, and the record offered here was recorded 6 DAYS later, on 13th August 1898. It is a 7 single-sided E. Berliner Gramophone record, no. 5003, and is a cornet solo by Will E. Bates of the well-known Music Hall song Our Lodger s Such A Nice Young Man . I ve owned and sold dozens of Berliners in the last 50 years, but I ve never had a London Berliner of such an early date

CONDITION: V-, a surprisingly strong and loud player, with no jumps. Excellent cornet playing with some triple tonguing and variations in the last chorus.
