USA - INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS - IA LP 9

1968 ORIGINAL .... 100 GUARANTEED:

RARE SOUGHT authentic old thick cardboard cover 1968 ORIGINAL issue on the legendary International Artists label, it s an old I.A. pressing released over 50 years ago Texas acid-injected psychedelic fuzz-rock legends mostly featuring ROKY ERICKSON while the historic band issued four legendary/essential albums on the International Artists label
...an excellent array of Texas psychedelic laced garage nuggets
...

Although the BULL OF THE WOODS
was planned to be titled The Beauty And The Beast ...the label decided for whatever reason to change the title after the band s demise.

The LP s finest moments are Never Another one of the best and most demented tracks ever recorded and the only one on the album written by the usual songwriting duo of Roky Erickson and Tommy Hall and May The Circle Remain Unbroken, a haunting Roky composition that may be the strangest thing this great band ever cut...
The mighty ELEVATORS tasted success in 1966 with the garage psych-punk single You re Gonna Miss Me and a minor hit LP
The Psychedelic Sounds Of... which gave them some notoriety as the LP cover clearly referenced LSD, not to mention the sleeve notes on the back with its none too subtle references to the drug.
After another
holy-grail LP Easter Everywhere , the band attempted one last blast, even after their guitar/singer guru Roky Erickson had just been drugs busted and jailed.
So some of the tracks were recorded while lead singer Rocky Erickson was away for possession, and facing a 10 year stretch, the record sounds charmingly raw and highly spiritual: a snapshot of a band recalling their garage roots. The album was mainly the guitar player s, Stacey Sutherland s work-the production also introduced background arrangements to add a spooky disjointed feel.
The opening track, Livin On , is an anti-speed rant, extolling the virtues of grass - and it is dreamy and hypnotic, a simple delayed guitar with echo conjuring up slow days in the summer. In fact this track sets the scene for much of the LP -- gone are the frenetic, spiky punk chords of their first LP, replaced with hypnotic chords, atonal arrangements and a vocal style which can be charitably described as off key.
Don t let that put anyone off -- the interesting use of some of the arrangements on are simulated ala Love s Forever Changes and the few other bands that were experimenting with sounds not generally expected on rock records, but here they are used and differently, in a minor key, depressed but oddly joyous, as counterpoint to the bands harmonies and jangle0guitars. Other highlights include Dear Doctor Doom and Street Scene , songs referencing the band s life in the backwater of Texas.
A lot of the lyrics seem almost biblical, unsurprisingly considering where they came from, and the problems they were experiencing - Another highlight is The Rose and The Thorn key and time signature changes ahead of their time but a simple love song which aches with loss.
