HOWLIN WOLF MOANIN IN THE MOONLIGHT 1959

1st PRINT COVER WITH A D.J. COPY RUBBER STAMP ON THE BACK

1st PRINT CHESS RECORDS BLACK 2.75 DEEP GROOVE LABELS

MACHINE STAMPED MASTERING SHELDON IDENTIFIER BY SHELDON RECORDING STUDIOS INC.

Original 1st US Chess Records Monaural pressing of Howlin Wolf s 1st studio album Moaning In The Moonlight released in 1959. This compilation album includes the songs initially released as singles between 1951 and 1959 featuring one of the most popular hit singles Smokestack Lighnin . The Moanin In The Moonlight album is included in The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time of The Rolling Stone magazine. The currently listed copy is a promotional copy and is highly collectible and rare. Original 1st print US 1950s style cardboard cover contains a red D.J. Copy rubber stamp on the back cover. The original cover of Moanin In The Moonlight was designed by the famous artist / photographer Don Bronstein whose signature can be found at the bottom left corner of the front cover. Bronstein designed and photographed over 500 album covers for Chess Records, Verve and Columbia for the artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Chuck Berry to name a few. It s also worth mentioning that the back cover contains the notes by Billboard editor Paul Ackerman. The heavyweight plate vinyl contains the 1st print Chess Records CH-1434-LP black 2.75 deep groove labels with silver print. Very early 1st pressing vinyl with the 1st matrix numbers featuring the machine stamp Sheldon that identifies the mastering by Sheldon Recording Studios Inc: Side 1 - 9301-1 Sheldon Side 2 - 9302-2 Sheldon. The album comes with the original Chess Records plain white inner sleeve.

The cover is graded as Excellent Minus. It s very clean and doesn t have any splits, writing or ring wear. The top right corner of the front cover contains a very light crease with the top left and bottom right corners having a light push in. Some very light age shelf wear along the edges. The rigid spine contains a fully readable text. The top left corner of the back cover has some very light discoloration from the tape which has been removed, but no residue at all. The paste over slick is very clean with a couple of discoloration spots and super light shelf wear. We grade the vinyl as somewhere between Strong Very Good and Very Good Plus. It retains its beautiful factory lacquer but has some light non-feelable surface marks and hairlines as well as scuffs from the original inner sleeve, which is in Near Mint condition and doesn t have any splits or tears. The labels are very clean and in Near Mint Minus condition, scuff- and wear-free, only having a few very light spindle marks that can be seen under a strong light. The vinyl sounds great only having some very light occasional static, which might become more noticeable during the quiet parts. You might hear a short series of very light ticks at the start of Side 1 but most likely they would go away if you changed the weight of your tonearm. The occasional static could also get reduced or go away if the record was professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. Overall, the album is in great vintage condition, which is especially remarkable considering that it s from the 1950s.

A WARNER BROS. SOUND BUY , it is this slogan that was announced by the DJ at the leading radio stations opened the commercial break sponsored by Warner Bros. Records in the early 70s. Perhaps, this is the only promotional copy that has survived to this day having a special baggy with the advertisement banner promoting the company. Besides the slogan, the red banner contains the Warner Bros. shield logo which was revived after the Seven Arts name was dropped at the end of 1970. Incredibly rare and unique in terms of its significance piece of Warner Bros. Records history, one of the most influential record companies of that time. Possibly, it s this influence in particular that helped to convince Black Sabbath to change the initial title of this currently listed album, War Pigs , to Paranoid . We re confident that Warner Bros. commercial instincts helped the album under this title to become a top 10 hit on the US album chart of 1971 and went on to sell four million copies in the US alone according to the RIAA Gold Platinum database. The currently listed promotional release copy of Black Sabbath s 2nd studio album belonged to one of the DJs at KHJ Boss radio station in Los Angles and was pressed also in California at the Columbia Records plant in Santa Maria. Original promotional 1st print cover contains a unique combination of stickers on the front, consisting of the Warner Bros. Records Radio Station Service Not For Resale promotional timing strip and a Contains the hit IRON MAN hype sticker which comes across extremely rarely even on the commercial copies of this album. The Printed in U.S.A. hype sticker contains the WS 1887 catalog number which was assigned to the album. From the design standpoint the whole combination looks amazing an incredibly rare promotional baggy with A WARNER BROS. SOUND BUY slogan and WB Shield logo against the red background, a Warner Bros. promo strip containing the running time for each track and an extremely rare IRON MAN hit single hype sticker. Original Warner Bros. Records white labels with the Promotional Not For Sale banner, WB shield logo and WS 1887 catalog number. The full matrix numbers including the very early 1st -1B / -1B matrix numbers and the S factory identifier of the Santa Maria pressing plant as well as the Artisan Sound Recorders mastering company s logo are as follows: Side 1 WS-1887-39786-A-1B: Artisan Logo 1 Side 2 WS-1887-39787-B 1B Artisan Logo 1. This promotional copy comes with the original Distinguished Company / The Warner/Reprise Loss Leaders black and white inner sleeve.

The cover is graded as Excellent and would be Near Mint Minus if it wasn t due to the light shelf wear at the top of the front and back cover. Aside from that, the original Warner Bros. baggy has done great job of preserving the cover. The gatefold interior is in Near Mint Minus condition. I grade the vinyl as Very Good Plus. It s in stunning condition and retains its glossy factory lacquer. The vinyl only has a few very light non-feelable surface hairlines as well as scuffs from the original inner sleeve which is in Near Mint condition. The snow white labels are in beautiful Near Mint condition. The vinyl sounds great only having some very light occasional static. Track 1 of Side 1 has a couple of very light ticks, which probably will disappear if you change the balance of your tonearm. Most likely, the static also could get reduced or go away if the record was professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
