Very 1st version promotional copy of Capitol Records Meet the Beatles album with a FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY Not For Sale sticker. You know about the fact that the true 1st pressing of Meet the Beatles , which occurred on January 20, 1964, doesn t have the BMI / ASCAP publishing credits on the labels. The majority of these copies with the 1st print labels are Mono copies and only a small portion are Stereo. If the information found online can be trusted then their number constituted 15 with only a few hundred examples surviving to this day. The original 1st cardboard cover has a very rare promo sticker on the front which Capitol Records didn t use after 1964 reading: FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY Not For Sale . The cover doesn t have the producer credit on the back, Produced by George Martin , which appeared on the covers of later pressing. This copy was pressed at Capitol Records pressing plant in Scranton, PA and has the RIAA 3 number at the bottom right corner on the back cover. Original 1st print black multi-color band 1.5 pressing ring Stereo labels with the ST-2047 catalog number don t contain the BMI / ASCAP publishing credits. Very early 1st pressing with the 1st matrix numbers containing the -A1 stamper in the trail-off vinyl: Side 1 ST-1-2047-A1 2 IAM in a Triangle Side 2 ST-2-2047-B2 2 IAM in a Triangle . The ampersand symbol etched in the trail-off vinyl on both sides indicates that the stamper was created from a Stereo-cut lacquer at the Scranton, PA pressing plant. This promotional copy comes with the original Capitol Records Royal Blue inner sleeve.
The cover is graded as Excellent Plus. It s very clean and doesn t have any splits, wear, ring wear, soiling, writing or residue, only some very light age discoloration in a couple of small spots as well as some light and barely noticeable dings to the corners. The top of the back cover has a large blank banner sticker, most likely affixed at the radio station where this promotional copy was delivered to and was meant for the DJ s notes. We grade the 1st pressing vinyl as Very Good Plus for Side 1 and Excellent Minus for Side 2. It has a beautiful glossy factory lacquer only having a few very light hairlines as well as scuffs from the original inner sleeve which is in Near Mint Minus condition and doesn t have any splits or tears. The very clean labels are in Near Mint Minus condition with just a couple of very light spindle marks that can be seen under a strong light.
