Original standard copies of this quadraphonic release, in exceptional condition, complete with the OBI and all inserts, are extremely rare in their own right. A White Label Promo WLP edition is genuinely near impossible to find.
This 1974 Japanese pressing is one of the very few quad releases that actually works well on a stereo system. Unlike most other quadraphonic pressings of DSOTM that used the SQ quad system, this Japanese 1974 release used the QS Quadraphonic system, which is often considered superior in its decoding. It is sought after as a Grail piece by many collectors. Most consider it not only one of their rarer vinyl pieces, but also that this pressing delivers a different detailed sound stage than standard stereo pressings. That is not to say that this quad version is better than the stereo editions, but rather that it places a more pronounced spotlight on certain instrumentation, effects, and vocals VS the basic stereo mix. It delivers a very unique, and enjoyable listening experience. Listening to this DSOTM quad release is a re-discovery journey of an album that we all thought we knew by heart.
Vinyl Playback: M-
Audio Play Grade: Solid 9.9/10
Near audio perfection. One tic during, and one pop near the very, very end of Great Gig . No repeat tics, crackle, or other audible issues to report whatsoever. Surface noise is virtually non-existant. The record has twice been diligently play-graded from start to finish, on both sides.
Vinyl Visual: NM-
Gorgeous. The record remains clean and glossy. A few whispy, superficial spider lines are seen under fluorescent light. No scratches or scuffs of concern are seen.
WLP Labels: NM
A couple of light spindle marks.
GF Cover: EX
The 51 year old GF cover remains in top, collector calibre condition. Some gentle wear, and scuffs are seen most of which sit hidden beneath the OBI. Four brief creases along the rear spine, and a mini push is present at the covers rear bottom. Spine is fully legible. Cover has zero seam splits. In hand the gatefold presents as solidly NM-.
OBI Front: NM-
Light handling blemishes. No tears or folds.
OBI Back: EX
Mild foxing is seen. No tears or folds.
32 Page Booklet: EX
A mini corner fold on 3 pages.
Japanese Quad Insert Page: EX-
Gentle foxing.
