READ THIS These records are NOT sold for perfect sound quality. They re sold for their scarcity and VISUAL grading. They ve been in storage for a decade, and they WILL play with surface noise that can be addressed with D4 or a VPI cleaning. I can t test-play at the minute. Please don t bid if this is a problem for you.
Beatles LP 1968 Magical Mystery Tour UNDOCUMENTED Apple w/Capitol Logo, NM
Please Note: Thank you to all who purchased a copy of my book on flash drive this Christmas Season, and for the marvelous feedback on its contents
This flash drive will be retired for the season at the end of the month, so if you re still one of the Watchers, please buy yours now. Otherwise, you ll have to wait until next year. Best for a Happy New Year to us all.
By far, a good 99 of the time when you find a 1968 copy of Magical Mystery Tour on Apple with the Capitol logo, it will have the standard-issue label text layout that all Apple pressings had from 1968 through to the end of 1975. However there was an extremely limited run of in-house labels that were typeset by the Winchester plant only. The Side 1 labels are a straight-transfer from the Green target Capitol label pressing, and the Side 2 label is uniquely rearranged. See compere photo. There s also a pressing of Rubber Soul, which is equally rare for those interested in starting now to find their copy.
Whereas the standard label layout featured all capital lettering typeset on both sides, as well as the Side 2 title on three lines see compere photo , this scarce layout features case-sensitive upper and lowercase font, and the title on two lines on Side 2. These copies are simply impossible to find.
There was also a Winchester 1971 pressing with Mfd. By Apple Records, Inc. at the bottom of the Side 1 label with this same layout and font for both Magical Mystery Tour and Rubber Soul, which are just very slightly easier to find. But not by much.
This is the only copy I ve ever seen in my life. It isn t discussed in any of the great books to date, and it s in beautiful collector s NM condition. Be sure to have a look at the 1971 Rubber Soul copy for sale this week, with the same in-house straight transfer labels
Vinyl--- NM/NM. With the exception of some manufacturer s cloudiness on both sides that was there when the LP left the pressing plant, this copy looks nearly unplayed. 100 original gloss.
Plates--- P1/W2. Hand-etched Delta symbol or rifle in the dead wax on both sides makes this copy pressed in Winchester.
Cover--- VG . Robust colors, front and back. Light dirtwear and fading, and I mean light. Back cover has very minor record outdent at the top only. All seams and spine are strong, with the exception of the top right corner having a ding. See photo. NO SEAM SPLITS.
Spine features the catalogue number AND the small Capitol logo, which was discontinued in 1975.
Gatefold--- VG . Just some minor yellowing and very light foxing.
Booklet is detached.
Labels--- NM/NM. Very nice dark green rich Apple labels look 1968-freshly printed. NO SPINDLE MARKS.
Apple Inner Sleeve--- VG . Generic white inner sleeve with die-cut hole for the labels to show is present. Sleeve has moderately yellowed uniformly. NO SPLIT SEAMS.
A generic inner sleeve will be provided, so as not to damage your original Apple inner sleeve en route.
RIAA: N/A
If you ve never seen one of these before, you should take that as a very strong indication that you re not going to see another one in the future.
As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks
Note: All LP s ship outside of their album covers in order not to damage the covers during shipment.
CAUTION There has been a startling increase in bidders canceling their bids. A word to the wise, I have started blocking any and all bidders who retract their bids regardless of the reason.
Please don t bid unless you re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks
Please note: Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized. The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can t get it to fully return to its cradle. Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix? Thanks
