Original Columbia Records promotional release of Bob Dylan s 7th studio album Blonde on Blonde released on May 16, 1966. Original withdrawn 1st print gatefold cover featuring the photo of the Italian actress Claudia Cardinale. There is a common misconception that the photo of Cardinale was removed from the initial pressing s cover at the request of the actress. However, the photographer Jerry Schatzberg refuted this statement saying that it wasn t Cardinale s lawyers who insisted that Columbia Records remove the photo, but instead it was Dylan s agents who refused to use it. The promotional campaign of this album that lasted for the first two months after the release date included the placement of a hype sticker on the front cover of the album. There re 2 variations of this sticker with the sticker present on this promotional copy s cover being much rarer and different in size and content from the other variation. This 4 x 4.5 hype sticker affixed to the top right corner of the front cover underneath the shrink wrap besides the Bob Dylan New Album Deluxe 2-Record Set Featuring Rainy Day Women 12 35 and I Want You banner also features the titles of the other songs from the album. The back cover contains two Columbia Records Radio Station Service Not For Resale timing strip stickers with the CL 2516 / CL 2517 catalog numbers for radio station DJs. Promotional Columbia Records 2-Eye Radio Station Copy Not For Resale CL 2516 / CL 2517 2.75 pressing ring white labels. 1st promotional issue pressed at the Columbia Records, Terre Haute, IN plant and mastered by Customatrix, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Columbia Records and CBS, Inc., as identified by the T and o symbols in the runout grooves. The full matrix numbers of this promotional pressing are as follows: Side 1 - o XLP113761-2F A I I I Side 2 - o XLP113762-3E B I I T Side 3 - o XLP113763-4B B I I Side 4 - o XLP13764-2B A I I. The album comes with two original dark blue inner sleeves having stripes running vertically and the Columbia Records logo in the middle.
It s extremely hard to find a cover of this album in such a beautiful Near Mint condition, not to even mention the fact that this is the promotional issue. The original factory shrink wrap remains fully intact. The cover only has a few creases along the spine on the front and back with a corner crease present at the top right on the back. Aside from that, the cover is in truly beautiful condition. I grade the vinyl as:

The vinyl retains its factory gloss having a few light non-feelable surfaces hairlines and marks, as well as scuffs from the original inner sleeves, with one of them being in Near Mint condition and the other one in Excellent due to a couple of dings along the mouth. The stunning white labels of all of the four sides are in Near Mint condition, very clean, scuff- and wear-free, with only a couple of very light spindle marks that can only be seen under a certain angle. The vinyl sounds amazing, which is especially notable due to it being a promotional copy, only having some very light static, which is more noticeable during the quiet parts. The static most likely could be reduced or would go away if the vinyl was professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
